If a church is very old, the stained glass has likely been a part of the church for a long time and therefore has memories and sentimental value attached to it. Even stained glass windows that are newer or more modern may still be meaningful to a church due to their aesthetic value. Seeing the way that the sun floods in through the stained glass and sends beautiful colors and dancing rays of light across the floor and interior is almost a spiritual experience in itself. That’s why when stained glass windows begin to suffer due to age and deterioration, many churches opt for stained glass restoration.

At this point in time, many churches in the Colorado Springs area are due for stained glass restoration. Custom Stained Glass For The Perfect Custom Built Home

Having a home custom designed and made for you is a very exciting time!  Sure, there are a lot of decisions to make but each one gets you closer to the beautiful home you always dreamed of!  When it comes to choosing some of the interior architectural elements, nothing could be more ubiquitous, gorgeous and functional than something like stained glass either!   It is a fantastic way to add privacy to the parts of your home that need it without sacrificing that one-of-a-kind feel. In fact, stained glass is incredibly customizable and goes great in new or modern homes too.  Not only that but, it is always incredible elegant, no matter where you decide to have it installed. Below are the most popular places we install stained glass on custom homes for maximum impact and effortless style.

Best Areas For Stained Glass In Custom Built Homes

Bathroom Stained Glass:  Windows on bathrooms, while essential, can turn out to be quite tricky.  While you want the most sunlight possible, large windows often end up letting in both sunlight and the prying eyes of the world.  Stained glass in the bathroom of your custom built home is the perfect way to let in all the natural light you crave without sacrificing privacy, in a place where you really need it.

Entryway Stained Glass:  The entryway of your home is the first thing that people will see when they come to your newly built haven–why not start those visiting your home off in style with gorgeous stained glass on your sidelights and/or transom windows?  Not only will it impress guests coming into your home, it will make a bold statement from the outside too, for those just passing on.

Kitchen Stained Glass:  When you have a custom home built, sometimes it is hard to think far enough outside the box to get something really unique.  One way to do this is to work with stained glass in areas it is perfect for but infrequently seen! One of these areas is the kitchen and stained glass is just perfect to use on cabinets to really pack a design punch!  The great part about stained glass on kitchen cabinets is, it gives enough coverage to the odds and ends in your kitchen cabinets to obscure clutter, but enough transparency to mimic the open cabinet feel! And, since stained glass is 100% customizable, it allows for you to really add your own touch to your custom kitchen area.

Stained Glass Restoration In Colorado Springs: Preserving Pieces Of History

Replacing And Repairing Stained Glass On Colorado Springs Churches

Colorado Springs arguably has some of the most beautiful stained glass windows in the country, all with their own unique look and history. These gorgeous pieces of history are cherished by the parishioners of the churches they grace. In fact, they are so loved, we do quite a few restorations in the Colorado Springs area here at Scottish Stained Glass. However, not every church is sure what to do with their aging stained glass windows and one question we get quite often is whether to replace or restore. This makes sense since often times the glass can look beyond repair: the frames may be sagging or the glass itself is dirty, chipped, cracked, or even missing pieces of glass altogether; conditions all too common in stained glass windows that are nearing 100 years old. When we get this kind of inquiry we always tell church patrons that whether to replace or repair stained glass is really a case by case decision, however, we can shed some light on factors to consider when making that decision as we have below.

Weigh The Cost Of Replacing Vs. Repairing Stained Glass Windows

Restoring damaged stained glass windows, especially very large ones, is usually quite expensive. However, once they are restored, the value of these stained glass window is actually 4x that of valuable any new window. While a new window may cost less initially, it will be decades before its value is close to that of a restored antique stained glass window. Since funding a project like this is always an issue, at Scottish Stained Glass Colorado Springs, we are happy to give you advice on fundraisers we have seen other churches do. It has been our experience that this type of project is one most congregation and even communities readily support.

Understand That Scottish Stained Glass Can Match Your Existing Glass

Another reason churches hesitate to replace their stained glass is that they think antique glass cannot be matched or recreated the same. While it is true that techniques used to create some older stained glass are often hard to replicate, we are happy to report that at Scottish, we hire the best stained glass repair artists in the state, who are able to precisely match nearly any stained glass panel. Also, for those very large windows, we have developed special methods for removing and restoring and reinstalling them precisely. Keep in mind these types of restorations are lengthy but well worth it once the amazing process brings these windows of such value (both sentimental and monetary) back to their original luster and beauty for the next 100 years.

Consider The History Of Your Church’s Stained Glass

Finally, church members must never forget the long and unique history their Colorado Springs church’s stained glass windows. Their value is as much monetary as it is sentimental–so keeping them and restoring them may be the best idea. If your stained glass is very old (dating back to the early-mid 20th century) it is likely that your church’s stained glass windows were designed by a stained glass master of the time, greatly increasing their value; works by this skilled artisan plays an important part in the history of your church and something you may want to preserve.

If your church stained glass shows signs of wear it is a good idea to have Scottish Stained Glass come in and consult with you. In the case of very old stained glass, it is best not to wait because the damage will only grow worse and more costly to repair over time. The Custom And Restoration Painted Stained Glass Experts for Colorado Springs Church Windows

Scottish Stained Glass:  Colorado Springs’s Premiere Painted Stained Glass Artist

Painted stained glass is a very old art form that takes years of experience to master and perfect. Here at Scottish Stained glass we have, in fact, spent the last three decades honing our craft and are proud to call ourselves experts in the field.  Difficult as it may be, the process of painted stained glass is actually quite fascinating and something we absolutely love to do.   Whether you are looking for painted glass restoration or a custom creation from our studio, learning how we will make or restore your church’s stained glass could be of great interest to you and your congregation.  Continue reading to get a better understanding of the complex processes that will be involved in crafting your one-of-a-kind painted stained glass masterpiece.

The Beautiful Tradition Of Painted Stained On Churches

Painted stained glass is a lovely and unique way to add to the beauty of your Colorado Springs church chapel.   However, this seemingly simple craft is actually quite complex and even scientific.  This is because the colors you see on painted stained glass are actually achieved through the use of specific chemical interactions of different minerals and oils.  Our artists must accurately predict what colors will be brought forth after firing or layer them to achieve the exact hue.  This is done through trial and error combined with extensive knowledge of the chemical and firing process.  The painted stained glass methods are listed below.

Painted Stained Glass Method 1

The artist starts with colored glass and paints special black paint made of oils and minerals onto it.  This piece of glass is then fired in our kiln at 1250-1450 for a couple of hours until the paint melts into the glass.  The paint then becomes part of the glass and will never rub off or be removed.

Painted Stained Glass Method 2

The second method involves clear glass.  During this process, colors are painted on a clear piece of glass one at a time and fired in between layers of color to build up layers of shading or color. Any color that involves the use of yellow can be particularly difficult in this method as the chemical used for yellows color (silver staining) is very toxic and will destroy other colors.  For this reason, when trying to achieve the color green for instance, the toxic yellow must be painted on the opposite side of the glass as the blue paint in order to keep the yellow from damaging the blue paint.

Colorado Springs’s Premiere Painted Stained Glass Artists

At Scottish matching styles on restoration projects is always a challenge but one we love taking on.  There is no greater satisfaction that successful recreating the steps of a former stained glass artist to restore or enhance their work.  Often times it is a lot like detective work because it means figuring out what type of techniques the original artist used.  For instance, sometimes artists would paint the black paint on their glass and then use a stick to rub off part of the black paint to give the piece texture, or put in unique elements like blades of glass.  In order to pinpoint exactly what was done our artists sometimes do numerous iterations.  Here at Scottish Stained Glass, we are always up to the challenge of restoring your stained glass to its former look and luster.

Our Technique for Restoring Colorado Springs’s 100 Year Old Church Stained Glass

Posted January 30th, 2018 by Martin Faith

Colorado Springs is home to some of the most elegant, historic churches on the Western side of the US. These Colorado Springs churches feature some of the most beautiful, symbolic, antique stained glass windows. We’re proud to have worked with local churches to restore these pieces of art, prolonging their product life for another 100 years. Scottish Stained Glass is the recognized leader in stained glass restoration. Colorado Springs Church Stained Glass Restoration

We begin every restoration process with an on-site assessment. This assessment allows us to really analyze all underlying issues that have over time lead to the deterioration of your windows. Lead begins to oxidize at around the 75 year mark, leading to the production of white powder and weaker stained glass frames. There are many exterior causes that can warp the shape of your stained glass as well, so properly investigating these issues allows us to create a custom-fit restoration plan to better deter those problems from arising again. Once the assessment is completed by our team of local, experienced glass artisans, we delicately deliver your stained glass window back to our repair shop.

Mimicking Damaged Stained Glass from Your Colorado Springs Church

Once your stained glass window arrives at our repair shop, we soak it for at least two weeks in a proprietary soap blend that thoroughly removes all excrements and stains that have built up from the last 100 years. We locate perfect matching stained glass pieces to replace any damaged original glass from either our vast inventory of over 50,000 stained glass pieces or by having it custom made. Our design experts can replicate painted glass as well mirroring the original technique. We rebuild your stained glass window with lead, tin, and black cement, guaranteeing stronger durability.
