Stained glass can transform any room and add an elegant, artistic touch. While historically found mostly in churches, today more and more Denver homeowners are incorporating stained glass into their residences. From small accents to bold focal points, the creative possibilities are endless. Read on to discover some of the most popular ways to bring the beauty of stained glass into your Denver home.

Stained Glass for Entryways

Greet guests in style by highlighting your front door with custom stained glass sidelights or a transom window. Choose from traditional patterns, modern abstract designs, or landscape themes featuring Colorado flowers and wildlife. For privacy, add textured glass or opt for subdued tones in the stained glass to allow light in while obscuring views. Entryway stained glass proclaims “welcome” the moment visitors arrive.

Stained Glass for Staircases

Draw the eye upward with stained glass installed in a staircase wall or railing. Backlighting the glass creates a radiant glow to guide steps. For a contemporary look, install colorful rectangular glass panels in the risers themselves. Or accent the railing with smaller stained glass pieces. Staircase stained glass lends an elegant, dramatic flair as you ascend through the home.

Stained Glass for Bathrooms

Due to its water resistance and easy cleaning, stained glass shines in bathrooms. Use it to add pops of color without overwhelming the serenity. Some classic yet striking bathroom applications include:

  • Vibrant borders surrounding mirrors and medicine cabinets
  • Delicate floral designs for window privacy
  • Lit cabinet doors and faces for a spa-like atmosphere
  • Sunburst accents above tub surrounds

Stained glass offers privacy and beauty to transform bathrooms from purely functional into relaxing sanctuaries.

Stained Glass for Kitchens

In the heart of homes, stained glass injects artistry into kitchens. For the backsplash, commission a custom scene depicting Colorado vineyards and orchards. Frame upper cabinets with bordered stained glass panels to make them a focal point. Install illuminated leaded-glass doors on lower cabinets for an elegant yet subtle accent. Use obscured glass for increased visibility while retaining privacy. However you incorporate it, stained glass will infuse your kitchen with charm.

Stained Glass for Doors

Beyond the main entry, interior and exterior doors throughout the home provide perfect placements for stained glass. Adorn a mudroom door with colorful abstractions to brighten the space. For outdoor doors like patios and deck entrances, choose durable leaded glass designs. Install illuminated glass with privacy filters in spaces requiring both aesthetic appeal and seclusion. Get creative with the patterns, styles, and colors that reflect your tastes.

Stained Glass for Accents & Wall Hangings

Finally, don’t forget about using stained glass to adorn blank walls and enhance natural light. Cluster assorted stained glass pieces in a sunroom or reading nook to cast dazzling rainbow prisms. Commission custom landscape panels depicting Colorado destinations for getaway vibes. Hang faceted glass sculptures in windows or skylights as enchanting light catchers. Anywhere you want an artistic glow, stained glass can provide the solution.

Posted September 17th, 2020 by Martin Faith

Stained glass is fairly durable but like any architectural feature– it needs to be repaired or restored at some point.  This is true of home stained glass too. The restoration process in houses is incredibly easy and affordable as well.  Stained glass will last about 80 years before needing full-restoration but stained glass in homes could need it sooner due to more everyday wear and tear.   Getting your home stained glass repaired comes with many practical benefits too. Find out just a few of them below.

What Restoration Means For Your Denver home

Restoring Stained Glass Adds Value to Your Home:  As your home’s stained glass gets older it will definitely cracks, nicks and blemishes. Depending on where it is located it could also have damage from the outside threats like flying debris   These types of defects reduce the value of the glass and therefore your home–so restoring it is a good way to add value to your home.

Restoring Stained Glass Improves Aesthetics:  As stained glass ages, it looks faded and dull.  In a home where food is cooked regularly and the glass is accessible to dirty hands–stained glass gets grimy. . Sometimes pieces get cracked or even fall out altogether. None of these conditions helps the clean look of your home.  The solution?  Have your home’s stained glass professionally cleaned and restored and keep your home looking good.

Restoring Stained Glass Preserves History: When stained glass reaches an age where it needs to be restored is usually an antique.   This means it is an art piece from a bygone era.  In homes here in Denver, stained glass windows are on all sorts of vintage homes from Denver squares to the towering Capital hill mansions.  These homes were built in a rich part of Colorado history and almost always worthy of preservation.  They have stayed intact through all the history of our great city and by preserving them you keep a little bit of Denver’s soul intact.

Denver Stained Glass Myths: Stained Glass Breaks Easier Than Regular Windows

Posted May 3rd, 2018 by Martin Faith

Why Stained Glass Is Durable Enough For Your Denver Home

If you are like many homeowners in the Denver area, you are probably doing upgrades on your home and plan to continue doing so for quite some time, since buying a home in Denver right now is severely cost prohibitive.  You are likely considering many different home improvements and may have even considered one that is in our wheelhouse–stained glass windows. But, again, if you are like many people you may have nixed the idea thinking that stained glass is an expensive, luxury that is easily broken.   We are here to tell you, nothing could be further from the truth and to set the record straight on stained glass myths such as these.

3 Common Misconceptions About Stained Glass

Stained Glass Breaks Easily:  Stained glass, as you may not know, is just as strong as regular glass.  The composition is nearly identical to the glass you have in your windows right now in fact.  Leaded stained glass, as it were, in some ways is more durable than a normal window because often times breakage occurs in just one panel, meaning you don’t need to replace the whole window–just one panel.  The issue with stained glass windows is, they are typically a little more expensive to replace when broken and take more time since they are custom made. However, the beauty and potential value of these windows far outweigh the risk of breakage.

Stained Glass Is Very Expensive: Per square foot, it is definitely true that stained glass is more expensive than regular glass windows.  However, you also pay for what you get, meaning, these windows add more character privacy lasting charm than a plain glass window. Additionally, when the time comes to sell, the stained glass window will typically add more than 4 times its original value to the selling price of your Denver home.

Stained Glass Is Too Fancy For Regular Homes:  It is true stained glass used to be only something for wealthier families homes.  However, those days are long gone. In today’s modern world, you can get a lovely stained glass window or stained glass window panel installed in your home for a price point that is affordable to any average middle-family.  They are beautiful and well worth a small investment in your home.

Will Stained Glass Hold Up To Denver Weather?

Posted April 10th, 2018 by Martin Faith

Is Stained Glass Right For Denver Homes?

Many homeowners in the Denver area, when considering stained glass, are concerned about whether or not the climate of Denver is too harsh for it.  Not unlike regular glass, stained glass windows can be damaged and the issue lies in the fact that it is much more expensive to replace. The good news is, however, stained glass is very durable and holds up to regular weather quite nicely.  While hail is always a threat here, your stained glass is no more likely to break from hail as any of your other windows. Additionally, since Denver is so dry, it actually helps keep frames from rotting as quickly, which is usually where you will see the fastest degradation on a stained glass window. In all reality, a properly crafted and cared for stained glass will last 80-100 years before needing repairs.  For more information on what this means read on.

Well-crafted Stained Glass Windows Are More Durable

As we mentioned before a well-crafted stained glass window is very durable.  This includes the use of quality glass making and leading materials as well as a carefully constructed frame.  Another area where premature damage will occur is during the installation. If a stained glass installer does not thoroughly clean the glass, permanent smudges may be visible or, if moisture is trapped between the glass panel and an outer window water damage may occur.   What this really means though is– a stained glass expert, like us, is your first and best defense against your Denver home’s stained glass windows being damaged.

Stained Glass Maintenance To Prevent Damage

You can keep your stained glass from accruing damage by lightly cleaning it regularly to remove dirt and debris from dust and smog, inside and out.  These substances can dull the stained glass and reduces its natural luster. It is important to use the right cleaning agents and always be extra-light in your touch.  It is best if you, have a stained glass company deep clean your glass once a year too. Finally, if you see small cracks or chips or any sort of structural frame sagging, make sure to get your stained glass repair.  These little spots can turn into big, costly blemishes quickly.

What Is The Difference Between Stained And Leaded Glass?

Posted April 10th, 2018 by Martin Faith

The Difference Between Stained, Leaded and Beveled Glass:

At Scottish Stained Glass we get a lot of questions from Denver homeowners about stained glass and frankly, we love to answer questions for potential and existing customers alike.  The questions range from ones about styles and colors to others about restoration and repair. One question we get quite frequently is from people wondering what the difference is between stained glass and leaded glass and if beveled glass falls into either of those two categories.  While in all reality, stained and leaded glass are more or less the same thing, we have gone into a little detail below about all three nomenclatures to set the record straight and inform you, the general public.

What is Stained Glass vs. Leaded Glass?

Most people in the US use the terms stained glass and leaded glass interchangeably.  While that is perfectly understandable and acceptable, in the stained glass industry we generally refer to stained glass as having color and leaded glass as being clear.  So, as it were, all stained glass can be referred to as leaded, all leaded glass is usually not referred to as stained. The difference, as you can see, is minute but knowing this may help you better communicate the design you are looking for on your Denver home.

What Is Beveled Glass?

Beveled glass is any piece of glass, almost always clear, that has an angled cut around the periphery.  This angled cut makes for a wonderful play of light of the glass and creates gorgeous depth and character.

What is Textured Glass?

Although leaded glass is clear and usually lacks color, it is by no means boring because it is often combined with textured glass pieces.  Textured glass pieces come in a variety of appearances from wavy designs called “water glass” to feathery textures called “glue chip”. Using textured glass in leaded glass windows is a great way to add a classic elegant feel to any area of your Denver home: entryways, bathrooms, kitchens and more!

For more information on stained vs. leaded glass, watch the video below:
