Should Your Fort Collin’s Church Replace Or Restore Its Historical Stained Glass?

Replacing And Repairing Stained Glass On Fort Collins Churches

Fort Collins is an older city here in Colorado and arguably has some of the most beautiful and aged church stained glass windows in the state. Each of these windows has a unique look and an even more distinct history. They are ostensibly valuable pieces of history and rightfully cherished by the parishioners of the churches they grace. In fact, churchgoers love them so much, we do quite a few restorations in the Fort Collins area. However, not every church is sure what to do with the stained glass they know needs work and so we often get the questions on whether replacement or restoration is better. This makes sense since often times the glass can look beyond repair and large-scale repairs are known to be timely and expensive. When we get this kind of inquiry we always tell church patrons that whether to replace or repair stained glass is really a decision they need to make based on their individual stained glass and budget. However, we can shed some light on factors to consider when making that decision as we have below.

Weigh The Cost Of Replacing Vs. Repairing Stained Glass Windows

Restoring damaged stained glass windows, especially very large ones, can get pricey. However, once they are restored, they are 4x more valuable than new stained glass windows. While a new window may cost less upfront, it will be decades before its value is near that of a restored antique stained glass window. If your church wants to restore the glass but lacks the funds, we, at Scottish Stained Glass Fort Collins are happy to give you advice on fundraisers we have seen other churches do. In our 25+ year experience, this type of project is one most congregation and even communities readily support.

Understand That Scottish Stained Glass Can Match Your Existing Glass

Another reason churches hesitate to replace their stained glass is that they think antique glass cannot be recreated the same as theirs, which could be 100 years old. While it is true that techniques used to create antique stained glass are often hard to replicate, happily, here at Scottish, we hire the best-stained glass repair artists in the state and they are nearly always able to match any stained glass panel. Also, for those very large windows, we have developed special methods for removing and restoring and reinstalling them just as they were. Keep in mind these types of restorations are lengthy but well worth it once the amazing windows on your church, so full of sentimental and monetary value, are restored back to their original luster and beauty for the next 80-100 years.

Consider The History Of Your Church Stained Glass

Finally, church members must never forget how much historical value their Fort Collins church’s stained glass windows hold. Their value is as much monetary as it is sentimental–so keeping them and restoring them when possible is a good idea. If your stained glass is very old (dating back to the early-mid 20th century) it is likely that your church’s stained glass windows were crafted by a stained glass master of the time– increasing their value. Works by skilled artisans plays an important part in the history of Fort Collins and your church and likely worth preserving.

Scottish Stained Glass:  Fort Collins Premiere Painted Stained Glass Artist

Painted stained glass is an old and difficult art form that we, at Scottish Stained glass, have spent the last three decades working in and are proud to call ourselves experts in.  While the process is delicate and time-consuming, painted stained glass is also quite fascinating and something we love crafting. Continue reading to get a better understanding of the complex processes involved in crafting a painted stained glass masterpiece.

The Beautiful Tradition Of Painted Stained On Churches

Painted stained glass is a gorgeous way to add to the beauty of your Fort Collins church chapel. However, what may appear to be a simple end piece is actually quite complex to create and involves a fair amount of science.  This is because the colors you see on painted stained glass are achieved through the use of specific chemical interactions of different minerals and oils on the glass at certain temperatures.  Our artists must accurately predict what colors will come from different mixtures of chemicals when fired in our kiln. This is done through trial and error combined with extensive knowledge of the chemical and firing process.  The painted stained glass methods are listed below.

Painted Stained Glass Method 1

The artist starts with colored glass and paints special black paint made of oils and minerals onto it.  This piece of glass is then fired in our kiln at 1250-1450 for a couple of hours until the paint melts into the glass.  The paint then becomes part of the glass and will never rub off or be removed.

Painted Stained Glass Method 2

The second method involves clear glass.  During this process, colors are painted on a clear piece of glass one at a time and fired in between layers of color to build up layers of shading or color. Any color that involves the use of yellow can be particularly difficult in this method as the chemical used for yellows color (silver staining) is very toxic and will destroy other colors.  Because of this, when trying to achieve the color green for instance, the toxic yellow must be painted on the opposite side of the glass as the blue paint in order to keep the yellow from damaging the blue paint.

Painted Stained Glass Restoration In Fort Collins

At Scottish matching styles on restoration projects is a wonderful challenge that we love taking on.  We get a great sense of satisfaction in recreating steps of a former stained glass artist to restore or enhance their work.  What we do is a lot like detective work because it means piecing together different types of chemicals and techniques used by the original artist.  For instance, sometimes artists would paint the black paint on their glass and then use a stick to rub off part of the black paint to give the piece texture, or put in unique elements like blades of glass.  In order to get the exact right look, our artists sometimes do numerous iterations.  Here at Scottish Stained Glass, we are always up to the challenge of restoring your stained glass back to its original beauty.

The Beautiful Tradition Of Painted Stained On Churches

While painted stained glass may look simple to the untrained eyes is actually quite a complex art form.  The beautiful look you see on churches throughout the Salt Lake City is actually achieved through a complicated process that sometimes looks more like science than art. This is because the colors you see on painted stained glass are actually achieved by way of different chemical interactions of minerals and oils.

Painted Stained Glass Method 1

The artist starts with colored glass and then applies special black paint onto it. The piece of glass is then fired in our kiln at 1250-1450 for a couple of hours until the paint melts into the glass.   After the firing, the glass has the lovely bold colors you are used to seeing on stained glass and the paint is now a part of the glass and will never rub off or be removed.

Painted Stained Glass Method 2

The second method involves clear glass.  During this process, colors are painted on a clear piece of glass one at a time and then fired in between layers of color.  This allows the artist to build up layers of shading or color and give the piece depth.

*Interesting fact: Any color that involves the use of yellow can be particularly difficult in this method as the chemical used for yellows color (silver staining) is very toxic and will destroy other colors.  For this reason, when trying to achieve the color green for instance, the toxic yellow must be painted on the opposite side of the glass as the blue paint in order to keep the yellow from damaging the blue paint.

The Long and Lovely Tradition Painted Stained Glass Tradition

Painted stained glass is simply stunning and, as it happens, is a unique way to add character and charm to your  Kansas City church–there is no question about that.  It is also a feature many churches in KC already have.  On the surface, it may look like a relatively simple art form but the process is quite detailed and could even be considered scientific. This is because colors on painted stained glass are brought about through complicated chemical interactions of different minerals and oils, which result in various majestic colors.

Painted Stained Glass Method 1

The most basic method for painting color onto stained glass is for the artist starting with colored glass and then applying special black paint made up of oils and minerals onto it.  This starts a chemical reaction that changes the glass into rich colors you see on church and home windows and  is completed when the piece of glass is fired in our kiln at 1250-1450 for a couple of hours.  After the glass comes out the paint/color is permanently melted into the glass.  Now that the paint is part of the glass it can never rub off or be removed.

For this reason, when trying to achieve the color green for instance, the toxic yellow must be painted on the opposite side of the glass as the blue paint in order to keep the yellow from damaging the blue paint.

Restoration projects for painted stained glass come with their share of challenges but are definitely worth the time and effort involved in restoring the beauty of your glass.  The main challenge is figuring out precisely what type of techniques the original artist used.  For example, sometimes artists would use black paint on their glass but scrap some of it off with a stick to add texture. This same method was also used to etch in individual elements like blades of glass.  No matter what type technique was used,  our artists work hard to mimic them exactly– sometimes even doing multiple iterations to get it right.

Scottish Stained Glass:  Houston’s Premiere Painted Stained Glass Artist

Painted stained glass is a complicated process that we, at Scottish Stained Glass, have taken years to hone our skills in.  The process for painting stained glass is actually quite fascinating and requires years of extensive experience to master, which is why we have spent almost 3 decades learning this age-old craft. Whether your Houston church stained glass is old or new, we can confidently handle any scope of work.  From painted stained glass restoration to original painted stained glass creation, we are the Houston areas specialists. To get a better understanding of the complex processes involved in crafting your one-of-a-kind painted stained glass masterpiece, read on.

The Lovely Tradition Of Painted Stained On Churches

There is no denying that painted stained glass is a gorgeous and unique way to add character and charm to chapels in Houston.  Although it may appear simple, it is actually achieved through a complicated and, some may say, scientific method because the colors you see on painted stained glass are actually achieved through the use of complicated chemical interactions of different minerals and oils.

For this reason, when trying to achieve the color green for instance, the toxic yellow must be painted on the opposite side of the glass as the blue paint in order to keep the yellow from damaging the blue paint.

Houston’s Painted Stained Glass Experts

Matching styles on restoration projects is definitely a challenge and means figuring out what type of techniques the original artist used.  For example, some artists would sometimes paint the black paint on their glass and then use a wood stick to rub off part of the black paint to give the piece texture. They would also use this technique to scribe in individual elements like blades of glass.

Whatever the original technique our skilled artists do numerous iterations to exactly mimic the look of your chapel’s stained glass. Kansas City features some of the most beautiful, historic churches displaying elegant, vintage stained glass windows. Scottish Stained Glass is honored to have restored some of these beautiful, antique stained glass panels, contributing back to Kansas City’s wonderful church community. Our detailed, thorough stained glass restoration process is definitely something we’re well-known for, a process completed all over Kansas City and the rest of the Western half of our nation.

Kansas City Church Stained Glass Restoration Technique

Our church stained glass restoration technique begins with an assessment. Our team of local, experienced stained glass artisans start with an on-site assessment in order to evaluate the root issues that have caused the deterioration of your church’s stained glass windows. The on-site assessment allows us to analyze all contributing factors in order for us to better manipulate a custom-fit course of action when it comes to the restoration itself. For instance, if your stained glass is a concave shape it could mean that years of wind flow coming across your church is causing a vacuum, sucking the glass the other way.

Once we determine all underlying causes of deterioration regarding the glass, lead, and composition as a whole, our team carefully removes your stained glass window and transports it back to our repair studio.

Our Technique for Restoring San Antonio’s 100 Year Old Church Stained Glass

Posted January 30th, 2018 by Martin Faith

San Antonio is filled with beautiful, historic churches that feature intricate, antique stained glass windows. Scottish Stained Glass is proud to have restored some of San Antonio’s 100 year old church stained glass windows, prolonging their life for another 100 years. We’re known for our comprehensive, prized restoration process that’s completely restored many stained glass panels featured in San Antonio churches as well as churches all over the Western half of the US.

San Antonio Church Stained Glass Restoration Assessment

Our restoration process begins with the most important step: the assessment. Our team of local, experienced stained glass artisans begin the project with an on-site assessment of your church’s stained glass. This is the most vital step because it allows us to analyze the root problems causing the deterioration of the stained glass windows. For instance, after about 75 years lead begins to oxide from air and moisture exposure leading to a fine white dust appearing on the lead frames. The amount of oxidation allows us to determine if we have to completely remove the original lead or simply reinforce it with a lead and tin mixture. Once the assessment is complete, our team of glass artisans remove your stained glass window and carefully transport it back to our repair studio.

San Antonio Church Stained Glass Restoration Process

We allow your stained glass windows to soak in our proprietary soap blend for at least two weeks. This thoroughly removes all the dirt buildup from the last 100 years. If we can’t find a perfect match to your original stained glass from our inventory of over 50,000 stained glass pieces, we have glass custom made or painters replicate the technique of your painted glass.

We rebuild the window with lead and tin to stabilize the joints and ensure strength. A black cement is forced into all the cracks, and we also add reinforcing steel bars to brace the stained glass if necessary. You and your congregation will be breath-taken when you see your newly restored stained glass reinstalled.

While stained glass is considered to be mostly durable, there are factors that can cause it to lose its integrity and deteriorate. Defects in the construction of the panels or leading that has been exposed to too much heat and lost shape puts pressure on the glass and causes it to bow and crack. If these problems persist for too long without being addressed, pieces of glass may start to fall out, creating a safety hazard. Fortunately, the members of the First United Methodist Church in Del Rio, Texas noticed signs of deterioration in their stained glass before matters got out of hand.
