Stained Glass Addition to 1912 Victorian Home

Posted April 12th, 2013 by Martin Faith

I am excited to share with you a photograph of a completed Stained Glass front door project that was recently added to a 1912 Victorian home in Denver, Colorado. I am a stained glass designer working with Scottish Stained Glass and I recently had the opportunity to work with the home owner in an attempt to replicate an original stained glass window from his living room to add the design, colors, and textures for his front door and sidelights.

Our process began with an initial face-to-face meeting and discussion of what the client was trying to achieve. He showed me the interior of his home and the two original stained glass windows in his living room. I took multiple pictures so I would remember and design accordingly. We measured both his front door and he also had two sidelights on each side of the door. The idea was to let light in from the outside, provide privacy from the outside all while maintaining the feel of his Victorian home style. Let the design begin!

We wanted to make sure that the glass work was cohesive with the rest of this Victorian style home. The exterior of the home was the original brick, the door itself was wooden with clear glass and the home itself was full of natural colors with the pop of colors in the original stained glass windows.

Working together with our experienced CAD designer we were able to create cut pieces of glass to fit into the dimensions of the homeowners door and send him a couple of variations for his approval. Once the design was selected and approved, the client and I made an appointment to sit down and pick out both the textures and colors of the glass to begin the process of building his new Stained Glass.

My favorite part of this project was going through all the different textures and colors of glass to match the colors and textures of his original stained glass. We took the glass pieces into different areas of the house with sunlight and without the sunlight to mimic the different light that would be at his front door. This process did take us awhile, changing and moving around all of the different options. Once we made all the glass choices we dropped the colored glass into our drawings and sent to our client for final approval before being sent out to builder. From our initial meeting to the final product the time line was 6 weeks.

The final stained glass product was amazing! Once we completed this project, it was difficult to tell which piece was new and which was the one we based our work off of. Our client was extremely overwhelmed and pleased with his new front door; a true work of art!

Custom Stained Glass Studio Makes Clients’ Dreams into Reality

Posted April 11th, 2013 by Martin Faith
Every so often, one of our customers approaches us with a very special idea for a custom stained glass design. While much of our business consists of stained glass windows, in this particular case we were asked to make a chandelier for a client’s home.

Take a look at some photos of the finished product here:

This project was quite different to our usual ones in a variety of ways:

  • Our client provided us with a photo of what he wanted, and we were able to reproduce it to his specifications.
  • Instead of small pieces of glass forming intricate patterns, like most stained glass panels, these lamps were made of the most gorgeous hand blown glass slabs. Unfortunately, the photos don’t do this glass justice, but if you look closely you will see the warm honey-gold color and unique, organic swirls of cream running through it.

We had the pleasure of watching the builder at work, when he was constructing the stained glass lamps, and were blown away by the beauty of the glass itself. It looked “lit from within” and that’s before the pieces were assembled and a light bulb was added!

  • Whereas most of the stained glass work we do uses lead caming (those are the thin metal strips that holds the individual pieces of glass together) for this project, we used copper caming, which added a whole other level of class and beauty to the finished light fixtures.

Did you know the famed stained glass company, Tiffany, always used copper foil in their stunning and intricate lamp designs?

This was an exciting project to work on, from start to finish. These chandeliers will doubtless be the focal point of the entire room, and they make a powerful design statement.

However, there was one thing about this project that was no different to any of our other work: When it comes to stained glass windows and doors, every piece we do here at Scottish Stained Glass is custom made to our clients’ specifications.

If you have an idea for a stained glass window, and you don’t see anything like it in our online photo galleries, we will design and build it just for you. Our designers provide a free consultation and can draw out your design on graph paper, to scale, so that you can see exactly what it will look like installed in your windows.

Scottish Stained Glass is the largest studio of its kind in the U.S., and our builders are all well versed in the traditional stained glass making techniques that have been passed down through the centuries, as well as the use of the most modern materials and technologies.

Whatever style, whatever colors or textures, whatever shape or size, we’d love to collaborate with you and bring your exciting idea into reality. Why not contact us today?

Design Your Own Masterpiece with Custom Stained Glass Windows

Posted April 4th, 2013 by Martin Faith

Although we’ve been in business over 20 years and have created thousands upon thousands of stained glass window designs, every single piece we do is custom made. This allows you – the client – to design your own masterpiece; one that perfectly complements your décor, your personal aesthetics and your needs.

When you work with us, in effect you are collaborating with one of our talented designers. Even if you are one of those people who insist they have no artistic talent, your input can be all over the final design and choice of colors, textures and style of glass. (With the advice and experience of our team, of course, to make sure you wind up with something you’ll be absolutely proud of and delighted with.)

Yes, you can take the credit for the gorgeous piece of stained glass art that will soon be installed in your home!

Do you have a passion for classic, Victorian looking floral designs? Or do you prefer a modern, free form abstract design, or perhaps a traditional Celtic pattern?

You can start the design process looking through our existing designs and use them as the jumping off point for letting your creativity flow.

And if you are an artist or have your own unique vision, our designers can sketch your ideas out freehand, and keep working with you until the sketch perfectly matches your idea. There are few things more rewarding than watching your artistic vision come to life.

Although we’re all familiar with stained glass, many times people fail to realize just how detailed and how exquisite it really is until it arrives in their home, with their personal stamp on it. A stained glass window or door is a practical piece of art, but its practicality takes nothing away from its beauty.  We hear over and over from our clients that they never get tired of gazing at their stained glass “masterpieces” and watching the fascinating play of color, light and shadow they provide to a room.

Please consider that your stained glass might just become a family heirloom, and your contribution to the design may well be a story handed down from generation to generation.

If you are an admirer of fine art, cutting edge design, or master craftsmanship, you know what a difference these things make to your home. But perhaps you’ve lusted for a stained glass window for years, never thinking you could afford it? Although we use a combination of old world craftsmanship and modern technology to create and install our stained glass, one of our main missions is to bring stained glass to everyone. We think you’ll be surprised and pleased to find out how affordable it can be. Give us a call to start the design process, and get a free estimate of your stained glass project.

We’d love to show you what YOU can do and earn your business.

Stained Glass vs. Leaded Glass – Is there a Difference?

Posted March 27th, 2013 by Martin Faith

Here at Scottish Stained Glass, we frequently hear the terms stained glass and leaded glass used interchangeably. Most people assume that the lead in “leaded” glass refers to the metal caming which holds the pieces of stained glass together. However, this isn’t an accurate assumption.

When we use the term leaded glass, we are specifically describing patterns of clear glass, with various textures, finishes, and beveling. These panels can be completely clear, or combine different glass with various degrees of transparency. But it is called leaded glass because there is indeed lead in the chemical composition of the glass itself. Ordinary glass contains a percentage of calcium, but in the making of leaded glass that calcium is replaced with lead oxide while still molten. This gives it certain properties that make it perfect for stained glass window panels. It has a lower working temperature, and a greater refractivity.

What does all this mean? Basically, it means that our leaded glass windows create some of the most timeless and beautiful windows and doors you have ever seen. The way they catch the light and refract it into complex and delightful patterns of light and shadow in your home will enchant you.

What do people prefer?

Many clients prefer clear windows to colored, because they know the lack of color makes it easy to decorate around. You can decide to redecorate at any time and your clear leaded glass windows will not clash with your new color scheme. And if you decide to sell your home (and don’t want to take your stained glass windows with you) then you can feel confident that the clear glass will not conflict with a prospective buyer’s idea for a color scheme either.

The Dangers of Leaded Glass

Although lead is indeed toxic and leaded drinking glasses are no longer manufactured, there is no danger to enhancing the beauty of your home with leaded glass windows. You don’t have to worry about lead poisoning. Unless of course, you plan on eating off them…!

Our clear leaded glass panels are used for kitchen cabinets, skylights, entryways, transom windows and just about anywhere you need some privacy but still want to let in the sun.

So how do you decide – colored stained glass, or clear leaded glass?

We recommend looking at our extensive online galleries, to see not just different glass patterns but examples of rooms we have installed them in as well. As with everything Scottish Stained Glass does, your pieces will be custom made to your exact specifications. You can choose from an existing design, or work with one of our design techs to create your own.

Scottish Stained Glass Last a Life Time

Whether you decided on colored or clear, you can be sure that your stained glass windows or door panels will give your home a classy, unique look that will delight you for many years to come. Many of our clients have asked us to assist them in moving their stained glass windows when they move, and many have reported that these timeless beauties have become highly coveted family heirlooms!

Privacy Stained Glass; More than Just Beautiful

Posted March 22nd, 2013 by Martin Faith

Stained glass is often thought of as a decorative addition to a home, and while that’s true, it can also be functional.  In fact, a great deal of our clients chooses to invest in stained glass because it can offer beautiful looking privacy for any area of a home.  Clear windows are great for views, but you might have a window or two that show an unwanted view of the inside of your house to neighbors or visitors.

Colored glass options offer excellent privacy, or if you prefer clear glass, consider designs that incorporate textured glass and bevels to keep your window discrete.  When you’re choosing the look for your window, an expert designer is a key aspect of coming to a custom piece that offers the right level of privacy, and a design that you love.

Privacy Stained Glass Options

Consider these options for improving the privacy of your home:

  • Sidelight stained glass: Sidelights are one of the most popular areas homeowners choose to add stained glass.  If you have clear sidelights, it’s common that you’ll notice visitors peeking into your house to see if you’re home.  By added a textured piece of leaded glass to your sidelights, you won’t have to worry about peeking visitors anymore.
  • Bathrooms:  Many bathrooms have windows to offer natural light into the room.  However, bathrooms require a high level of privacy, and many people end up covering these windows and blocking out the natural light in favor of blocked vision.  Instead, consider an obscuring piece of stained glass to increase privacy without decreasing the natural light.
  • Bedrooms: Bedrooms are another area in a home where privacy is important.  Especially in areas where your home may be close to a neighbor’s, the last thing you want is for someone to be able to look straight through your bedroom window.  Adding stained glass allows you to add something beautiful to your bedroom, and solves any privacy problems you may have.
  • Windows facing other homes: Many neighborhoods have homes fairly close together, and no matter where your problem window is, we can help you cover it with something you’ll love.  Because our glass is custom, you’ll be able to design something that flows with the décor you have in whichever you room you need more privacy.

Privacy Stained Glass with Scottish Stained Glass

Scottish Stained Glass has been building beautiful pieces to add privacy to homes for over 20 years, so you can feel comfortable using our time tested custom glass process.  To learn more about adding the privacy you need with stained glass, give us a call or send an email today.  You can begin working on your piece with one of our talented designers immediately!

Creating Custom Scottish Stained Glass Windows – It Takes a Team!

Posted March 14th, 2013 by Martin Faith

When you order windows, doors, or other stained glass panels from Scottish Stained Glass, each piece is custom made to your tastes and your specifications. To accomplish this, you will be working directly with a team of specially trained professionals, consisting of your own personal stained glass designer, and an artist that we call a “builder.”

Scottish Stained Glass Designer

These are the talented individuals who will work with you to determine the patterns, styles, colors and overall look of your custom stained glass windows. If you live near any of our showrooms, one of our designers will visit you at home, to show you a wide array of photos and samples of glass. If you have your own idea in mind, our designers will actually work with you to bring this idea into reality, sometimes sketching it out on graph paper, to scale, so you can see exactly what it looks like.

Your designers will oversee your project from initial design consultation all the way through the building process, and can even work with you to bring a project in at a lower cost to fit your budget, by altering or simplifying the design.

Scottish Stained Glass Builder

The builder is the person who actually cuts each piece of glass to the exact size and shape your pattern requires, joins them with lead strips and a bit of solder and assembles the entire thing into a gorgeous, unique stained glass window. Although the term “builder” is not particularly glamorous and brings to mind a big sweaty guy with a tool belt, our builders are dedicated artists and master craftsmen who have trained for as long as ten years to be certified to make Scottish Stained Glass, using our special techniques and materials. (However, they might indeed sport a tool belt!)

Because of our exacting methods, builders can take many weeks to create a single stained glass window, of course depending on the size and complexity of the design. They must have the highest attention to detail and quality in their work.

Scottish Stained Glass Process

Watching one of our builders at work cutting each piece of glass to the precise size and shape is a fascinating experience. They work from what we call a “cartoon,” the pattern that one of our designers started by hand, which was then run through a sophisticated computer program to ensure that it is perfectly balanced, perfectly trued up, and exactly sized for efficient installation into your window or door. Can you imagine a stained glass panel turning out one quarter of an inch larger than your window? It would be absolutely impossible to install it. In fact, every one of our custom designs is reviewed 8 to ten times, including a final client review and approval. Our special computer process ensures that the pattern is perfect, and our builders take over from there.

Our dedication to quality materials and workmanship is evident in our final product, and in the rave reviews we receive from our customers. Why not give us a call today, and start working with your own stained glass team?  We look forward to working with you!

Celtic, Deco, Floral or Prairie Style Stained Glass… How Do You Choose?

Posted March 12th, 2013 by Martin Faith

Not to mention Aspen, contemporary, Art Nouveau, traditional, and many many other types. What are we referring to? All the different styles you have to choose from when you decide to add some Scottish Stained Glass windows or doors to your home.

So how do you choose?

Well, if you’ve already got a style in mind, it’s easy. If not, your home’s era and architecture might inform your decision.

Stained Glass Choices for Victorian or Older Homes

Perhaps your home is Victorian. If so, a traditional style like a floral or Celtic pattern would suit it perfectly. Or one of the stunning designs influenced by the famed Scottish watercolorist and architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. (If you are not familiar with Mackintosh’s work, click here and prepare to be delighted by vibrant color and striking patterns.) You might even want to purchase antique stained glass panels, instead of having new ones created.

Perhaps you have decorated your home with Deco touches. One of our Deco stained glass window designs would be a delightful complement. You could choose colors to match your décor, contrast with it, or even no color at all – the choice guaranteed to match any interior forever.

Stained Glass Choices for Modern Homes

Perhaps your home is modern and minimalist? Our signature Aspen collection (after all, Scottish Stained Glass was founded in Denver, land of the spectacular Rockies and its endless forests of Aspen trees) might be the perfect match. Or a Prairie Style inspired geometric design might be the perfect fit.

However, for most homes these days, there are a wide variety of stained glass styles that would suit. So that brings us again back to our original question, how do you choose?

This is where our custom design process enters the picture. Regardless of how many styles we have to choose from, each piece of stained glass we make is custom made to order, and hand built by one of our specially trained artisans.

A member of our expert stained glass design team will visit you at your home, free of charge, bearing inspiration in the form of many photos of different designs, patterns, styles and types of glass. If you have an idea in mind, she might sketch it out freehand on graph paper, till it looks like what you want. If not, our designers will work with you, making suggestions as to what would work best in your home.

Colored glass or clear? Pastels or jewel tones? Textured glass or smooth? An delicate, intricate pattern or a big, bold one?

All of these things will change the look and feel of your finished piece, and along with that the look and feel of the room you install it in, of course. (Some of them will change the price too, namely whether you choose an intricate pattern with dozens of pieces or a simpler design with bigger shapes.)

Please don’t let the amount of choices daunt you in the slightest. After all, our more than 15,000 previous customers didn’t, why should you? Contact our design team today for an estimate, to answer any questions or to get the ball rolling.

Stained Glass Windows Add Value and Distinctiveness to Your Home

Posted February 25th, 2013 by Martin Faith

Perhaps you’ve decided to add some beauty and uniqueness to your home in the form of stained glass windows in your living room, leaded glass sidelights to your entryway, a beveled or etched glass panel to your wine cellar door, or even a stained glass skylight.

We know from 20+ years of experience that you’ll be delighted with how stunning your home looks after your panels have been installed. In fact, many of our clients report that they never grow tired of admiring their stained glass, watching the play of the sunlight through the panes, the intricate shadows cast, or just the lovely mood if creates in any room of the home.

The Benefits of Stained Glass

But there are other benefits to adding stained glass than just the aesthetic, pleasurable ones. There are some other side benefits you might never have considered, which could turn out to be equally important in the long run.

Let’s say you have decided to sell your home. In today’s market, a seller needs to make their home stand out in the sea of homes on the market. Did you know that stained glass adds to the value of your home? All Scottish Stained Glass is custom designed and hand crafted, installed with the most modern techniques. We adhere strictly to all building codes.

Stained glass in your home might be the one thing that makes it stand out head and shoulders above the rest. Yes, that beautiful transom, entryway or bay window could be the thing that a buyer falls in love with, after seeing countless similar homes.

Some of our clients report that their stained glass windows were the very thing that sold their homes.

But perhaps you are now worried that the stained glass patio doors that you find so stunning are actually a turn off to buyers, in the same way that the colors you painted the bedrooms might not be to someone else’s tastes?

Clear Stained Glass

Consider clear stained glass! It is available in a wide variety of interesting textures, exciting designs and unique finishes. Since it has no color, it will never clash with anyone’s color scheme, no matter how they decide to redecorate the home or what color palette they choose.

This also holds true if you never sell your home, but decide to redecorate it yourself.

Frankly, we have never heard that any home buyer objected to any clear or colored stained glass panels either. Usually they are intrigued, thrilled and delighted to find them in a home they are considering purchasing. After all, nothing adds class like stained glass.

And by the way, many of our clients cannot bear to part with their stained glass panels if they sell their homes, and wind up taking them with them. After all, they are pieces of custom designed, fine art. Perhaps instead of being the selling point of your home, they are instead destined to become family heirlooms…!

Leaded Glass is not Always Stained Glass

Posted February 15th, 2013 by Martin Faith

Stained glass is often associated with ornate, colored pieces, or sometimes pieces that you might find in a church.  While colored leaded glass is available, some of our most popular designs and choices are actually made with colorless glass, and incorporate textures and bevels to create a beautiful and functional window.

Traditional Styles for Leaded Glass

Colorless leaded glass creates a timeless look, and it flows with your décor, even as it evolves and changes over time.  Working with custom pieces allows you to work through the small details of your window to create something completely unique, and that you’ll always enjoy displaying in your home.

If you have a traditional sense of style, leaded glass is great way to express yourself.  By choosing a style that mimics your décor, one of our pieces will flow perfectly and truly tie the look of your home together.  We offer a wide range of curved bevels and beautiful traditional textures to complete your window, and our expert designers will help you through the endless possibilities of luxurious leaded designs.

Contemporary Styles for Leaded Glass

If you lean on the modern side of style preferences, our windows can appeal to your décor as well! By using straight lines, geometric shapes, and the designs you love, contemporary stained glass is beautifully achievable.

Celtic Stained Glass Windows for a Timeless Touch of Grace and Style

Posted February 8th, 2013 by Martin Faith

You probably won’t be surprised to hear that one of our favorite styles of stained glass windows incorporates Celtic designs. After all, we are Scottish Stained Glass, and the history of the Celtic people is a large part of our history as well.

The story of the ancient Celts can be traced back for more than twenty-five centuries and although they are usually associated with Scotland or Ireland, at one time they lived throughout much of Europe! For a fascinating view of Celtic history, check out the webpage Celtic Europe:

But what does any of that have to do with stained glass windows? Well, one of the things this ancient culture was known for was their artwork, which was rich in symbolism. This same artwork has been the inspiration for many gorgeous stained glass masterpieces throughout the centuries.

The Celts didn’t do literal work like the religious art seen in many European churches. Rather, their work was figurative, indicating their beliefs on the nature of life and the relationship between life and death through patterns. Spirals, triskeles, step patterns, and key patterns are dominant motifs in Celtic art, as is “plait work” or woven, unbroken infinity patterns. But the most famous Celtic designs are probably the Celtic Cross and the Celtic Knot.

By the way, according to the Free Dictionary a triskele, or triskelion, is an ancient symbol consisting of three curved lines, three tree branches or three bent limbs radiating from a center.

Our stained glass windows are always custom made, so you can choose from a wide variety of existing styles and patterns, or design your own. If you, like us, are enamored of the beautiful and intricate Celtic designs, please take a run through our online Celtic gallery.  It contains photos of some of the Celtic stained glass we’ve done for clients throughout our twenty years in business.

We believe that Celtic stained glass designs are classic and can go with almost any decor. They look neither old fashioned nor modern, but simply express a lovely, timeless elegance. We can make them using clear or textured beveled glass, for any areas where you might want more privacy such as your entryway or even a bathroom window.

Or we can incorporate any amount of color, whether rich jewel tones or earthy neutrals to match your taste and your décor. Our designers are all well versed in the Celtic style, having created hundreds of panels, windows and doors in that style over the past twenty years.

Contact us for a free in-home consultation. If you haven’t already decided that Celtic style stained glass is right for you, you’ll be shown a wide array of other styles to choose from as well. And because each of our stained glass panels is custom designed and hand built, we can make any original stained glass idea you have come to life as well.

Exclusive Antique Stained Glass with Scottish

Posted January 25th, 2013 by Martin Faith

Over the past decade at Scottish Stained Glass we have been working to restore hundreds of salvaged antique windows from all across Scotland.  These windows have come from both homes and churches and embody traditional, authentic stained glass at its beginning.  With historically beautiful designs including Mackintosh roses, these pieces are an incredible addition to any home.

Antique Stained Glass Mackintosh Roses

Some of our most popular designs in our antique collection are those that incorporate a Mackintosh style rose, like the photo you see here.  Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a Scottish architect and designer who frequently designed stained glass windows to fit into his building designs.

In his stained glass work, he is most well-known for his roses.  They are usually small with a round border and a combination of lead lines and different shades of colors are used to emphasize different layers of a rose.  This design has always been well-loved in Scotland, and many of our antique pieces have a Mackintosh style rose in the design.

Angels in Antique Stained Glass

Angels are another common design that we found in many of our restored antique pieces.  As you can see from the window we have posted here, the angels are often an abstract design.  This particular window features a curved lead line just above the head that represents a halo, and feather-like green and yellow wings.

Traditional styles like angels usually feature many curved lines and colors to complete the look.  We also have numerous antique pieces that reflect the Art Nouveau style by using floral designs and rich curvature throughout.  No matter what styles you love when it comes to stained glass, our antique pieces offer a high level of uniqueness and historical value for any home.

Unlike our custom-built new pieces, our antique stained glass has simply been restored to its original look, so we cannot make them fit into a different sized window.  We can, however, frame them in wood if you prefer, although they still look lovely as hanging pieces without a frame.  When you hang these leaded glass pieces in front of a window at your home, natural light gives it new life, and you’ll be able to fully enjoy all of the beautiful colors used in the window.

Antique Stained Glass with Scottish Stained Glass

Our expert builders have taken the time to fully restore these beautiful pieces and make them available to our clients who are interested in the more historical styles of leaded glass.  To learn more about our antique collection, give us a call or send an email today, and find out how you can get one of these charming windows in your home!

Vast Glass Choices to Create Your Perfect Piece

Posted January 23rd, 2013 by Martin Faith

At Scottish Stained Glass, we often talk about the versatility of our products, and the power that our clients have to truly create exactly what they want for a stained glass window.  Part of the reason we’re able to do this is because of our exceptional and vast selection of glass colors and styles to choose from to make your design complete.

Every leaded glass window we build is custom and constructed by hand. Our builders take the time to ensure that each piece is cut perfectly, and they put together our stained glass piece by piece according to a full size pattern that we create. This process is extremely precise, and all of our builders are experienced in this traditional stained glass building method.

Your Glass Choices with Scottish Stained Glass

One of the most common reasons that homeowners choose to purchase a leaded glass window is to add privacy to a certain area in their home.  We offer a wide range of textured glass to provide this privacy, whether you choose colored glass or clear pieces.  In terms of colorless glass, some of our most private options are Granite and Cord glass.  Granite is a tightly textured glass that obscures vision almost completely, while corded has closely spaced lines.

If you’re looking for something with less obscurity, we offer many textures that fall under a clearer category.  Water glass and Baroque are both relatively clear textures that still offer style while only limiting visibility slightly.  We also offer mid-range textures like Hammered, Vecchio, and Gluechip.  Take a look at the photos on this page to see many of these textures incorporated into leaded glass windows.

Many of our clients use a combination of these textures, bevel clusters, and colors.  Colors are available in a wide range of opacity as well, and with over 600 to choose from, you’ll be able to find the right choice for your window and home.  Bevels are also a beautiful addition to any design, catching sunlight in new ways, and many clients choose bevels to create a kind of centerpiece for their window.

Because we offer such a wide selection of glass, our designers are able to work with you to build something you’ll love for years to come.  If you’re looking for a more picturesque window, we can use a combination of colors, textures, and the lead work itself to create anything from a sailboat to mountains, to animals.

Stained Glass as Glass Artwork for Your Home

Posted January 18th, 2013 by Martin Faith

When thinking about stained glass, many people picture elaborate, colorful windows that hang in the halls of churches displaying biblical figures.  You might even think of a traditional, ornate piece that you might see in a museum, or a Tiffany lamp.  While all of these things are possible with our stained glass, we also do much, much more.

At Scottish Stained Glass, we build every piece custom for our clients, and the versatility of our products allows us to offer endless design possibilities.  Investing in our stained glass pieces means you can create a work of glass art that is completely tailored to your tastes and style preferences.

Creating Stained Glass Art with Scottish Stained Glass

We use traditional methods to create authentic stained glass, which allows us to create pieces that are much more than a simple window.  Whether you’re looking for a family crest featuring a meaningful emblem, a rendition of a sail boat, or a scene from nature, let one of our talented designers walk you through the process.

Our process begins with an in-home consultation with a designer for your area.  During this appointment, your expert will help you narrow down the perfect design, and go over the many color and texture choices that you have available to truly complete the look you’re hoping for.  With over six hundred colors to choose from, dozens of bevels, and many different textures of glass, you’ll be able to make your stained glass visions a reality.

Once you have made a final decision on the design and colors for your piece, it will go into production.  We will create CAD drawings of your project, and our talented builders will work from these patterns to construct your window.  Each piece of our stained glass is cut and assembled by hand using traditional techniques.  This method has proven to create the most beautiful, authentic, and long lasting leaded glass possible.

Because everything is hand built, we can achieve a high level of detail with our cut glass pieces.  We have created windows with luscious floral aspects, animals, and trees.  However, if you’re looking for something with even more detail, consider adding a centerpiece of hand-painted glass, which allows for greater intricacy.

Scottish Stained Glass Art

If you have any questions about our process, or the possibilities of leaded glass designs, contact us today.  Our custom stained glass gives you the opportunity to invest in a piece of art that has been crafted specifically for you and your home, so give us a call today to set up a consultation and get started immediately!

Stunning Ceiling Stained Glass

Posted January 3rd, 2013 by Martin Faith

Stained glass ceilings are a huge, beautiful statement in any building, and Scottish Stained Glass is proud to have the ability to design, install, or repair and replace stained glass ceilings.

This application of stained glass is a showstopper, and it can be incorporated into churches, hotels, casinos, and even large shopping centers or malls.   These large, beautiful pieces often become a defining aspect of a building for years to come.

Adding a Stained Glass Ceiling to Your Building

As you can see from the pictures on this page, stained glass ceilings are highlighted by intricate details, and natural sunlight reveals a dazzling display of stained glass.  Structures with particularly high ceilings look great with glasswork as well, creating a piece of artwork in an unconventional way.

One of the most well-known locations for stained glass is in churches, and this applies to ceilings as well.  Adding our product to your ceiling will be a new, fresh way to display artwork throughout your church.  This can make your facility stand out from other churches in the area, and the beautiful natural light let in by this type of addition will make your church even more well-loved and well-known over the years.   Just like stained glass windows, we can depict biblical stories, murals, or simple designs in your ceiling piece.

If you own a hotel, consider adding stained glass to the ceiling in your lobby.  The Boulderado Hotel, in Boulder Colorado, for example, has a huge stained glass ceiling in the entryway.  This glass alone brings visitors to the area, and gives the hotel a sophisticated, luxurious look.  You want your visitors to remember your hotel, not only because it is a great facility, but also because it is beautiful, and with a stained glass ceiling, your building will always be memorable.

Casinos are another great location for stained glass ceilings.  Make a lasting impression on your customers with a brilliant ceiling that will look fantastic.  Casinos are known for their bright colors and lights, and we can create a ceiling that matches the décor of your business, and flows with the interior as a whole.

Stained Glass Ceiling Repairs

If you already have a stained glass ceiling, feel free to contact us about repairing or replacing your glass.  Our expert team can restore your stained glass ceiling to its original look, and make repairs for a stronger, longer lasting piece.

Scottish Stained Glass has been in business for over 20 years, and we have the experience to repair your glasswork.  If you don’t want your business disrupted, for example, our team can work with you to only repair a few sections at a time for minimal construction space, or whatever your needs may be.

Scottish Stained Glass Ceilings

At Scottish Stained Glass, we work with only the best quality glass available, and that has helped us become the leading provider of this product in the nation.  Our design team will help you create the perfect style for your building, and we take the time to learn about your needs, and the needs of your structure.  This means that we can create the best ceiling possible for your unique needs.

Feel free to browse our gallery to get a better idea of the many options we offer, and to get a better idea of how you want to incorporate stained glass into your ceiling.  Give us a call or send an email with any questions, or to set up a consultation today!

Aspen Stained Glass Windows Colorado

Posted December 31st, 2012 by Martin Faith

One of the many wonders of Colorado is the big groves of Aspens, with their distinctive white trunks and round-ish shaped leaves waving in the breeze. Our lovely Rocky Mountains are carpeted in beautiful aspen forests that are a delight to drive by or hike through. So in homage to this wonderful native Colorado tree, we’ve created our signature collection of Aspen Stained Glass.

Although many of our stained glass window designs are traditional, such as Celtic, Art Deco, or Victorian looking florals, our Aspen Collection is distinctively different. It’s modern and can seem almost abstract in appearance. It’s perfect for any home from a mountain ski lodge to a city loft or a rural mansion. If you’ve ever been inspired by the beauty of the aspens, perhaps our the signature Scottish Stained Glass signature Aspen Collection is exactly what you’ve been looking for.

Bring the Glory of the Rockies Into Your Home with Stained Glass

For many people, their favorite season is fall, when the trees turn colors. In the fall, people come from far and wide to see the glory of the aspens as they turn a gorgeous golden yellow. Entire mountain sides appear to glow with light from their vivid color. Whether you prefer your aspens with the green leaves of spring or the golden leaves of fall, or perhaps just the architectural beauty of their trunks and branches with no leaves at all in winter – we can custom design and your stained glass window or door to reflect your tastes. Yes, whether you’d like vivid colored glass or clear, textured or any combination, our stained glass designers will work with you.

As for the town of Aspen, it has become a ski resort like no other, attracting celebrities and those with great taste from around the world. If you own property in Aspen, stained glass can add great value and enhance the distinctiveness and beauty of your home. Imagine a grove of stately aspens giving you more privacy in that master bathroom bay window, or a single aspen tree snaking its way up your sidelights on either side of your front door!

Dare we say that our Aspen Stained Glass Collection is as spectacular as the real live ones outside your window? And although an individual aspen tree can live anywhere from 40 to 150 years, your stained glass could last even longer than that, becoming a family heirloom.

Please take a stroll through our Aspen Collection gallery and see if that starts to fertilize your imagination. If you have an idea, whether aspen related or not, our professional design staff will work with you to see it come to life.

Did you know… in some countries, the aspen tree is believed to ward off evil spirits? We really can’t comment about that, but our aspen stained glass will definitely ward off boring décor for many years to come!

Contact us for more information about any of our stained glass window styles, or to have one of our designers come to your home for a free consultation. We look forward to working with you.

Beveled Stained Glass Windows Turn Your Home into a Prism

Posted December 28th, 2012 by Martin Faith

No one wants their home to feel like a prison, but what about a prism? Let us explain! Before we talk “prism” we need to explain about beveled glass, which is one of our specialties here at Scottish Stained Glass. If you are not familiar with this style of glasswork, it’s made out of thick, clear glass that has been cut into the shapes that will form the desired pattern. Then, the edges of the glass are ground and polished, forming an angle.

You might be familiar with beveled glass in decorative mirrors? Although they look beautiful, the sun doesn’t actually shine through a mirror, so you don’t get the same amazing effect as with a beveled glass window. It’s the angles in the glass, that when the sun shines through them, forms the prism effect.

If you just can’t get enough of the natural light in your home, you will be delighted with the dancing colors and flashes of light created by a beveled stained glass window or door panel.

Can we get scientific on you for just a moment? As you probably know, white light contains all the colors of the rainbow. A prism made of glass actually breaks up white light into its constituent colors, in effect setting them free to be refracted about the room, creating an almost rainbow like effect.

Scottish Stained Glass Designers

Our beveled glass designers are all huge fans of the traditional beveled glass that graced the European palaces of old, as well as the Victorian style that was so popular in older American mansions. These traditional designs have formed the inspiration for our own collection of beveled glass windows.

Clear beveled glass can be combined in an unending array of designs with colored stained glass, or textured glass, to meet any client’s needs or tastes. Please take a look at our beveled glass gallery to get a better idea of what we’re talking about.

The results are elegant, classy, eye-catching and frankly stunning, if we do say so ourselves. Beveled glass windows are particularly popular in entryways, but are also a fabulous choice for kitchen cabinet doors, transoms or anywhere you need a bit more privacy than plain old windows provide.

Prism Light

The prism effect provides a unique way to add light, vibrancy and color to a room, yet not clash with any existing color scheme or décor. If you see a design you like, we can make that same pattern for your home, but since each of our pieces has to be custom made, we could also design completely original beveled or stained glass windows for you.

Beveled glass windows catch the light in a dramatic and unusual way. If any of our beveled glass designs catch your fancy, why not give us a call today? Our talented team of designers will work with you to create the perfect beveled or stained glass windows for your home, office or retail space.

Antique Scottish Stained Glass Window Collection is a Piece of History

Posted December 26th, 2012 by Martin Faith

Scottish Stained Glass is proud to announce our first ever fundraiser for Project C.U.R.E. on June 21st. The proceeds will assist that worthy organization in sending $1,000,000 worth of medical supplies to a hospital’s pediatric ward in Belize. Not just any old fundraiser, this one will consist of selling off Scottish Stained Glass founder Martin Faith’s prized, antique stained glass window collection.

These windows are beauties, each one at least 100 years old, imported from homes in Scotland that were replacing them with more modern windows. Can you imagine! Some contain colored glass, some are all clear or textured glass, all in great condition and ready to find appreciative new homes with Denver area stained glass lovers.

The history of this antique window collection is pretty cool. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Glasgow was the second wealthiest city in the British Empire, with London, of course, being the most prosperous. Indeed, Glasgow was referred to as the “Second City of the Empire”.

This wealth led to gorgeous homes, many the size of castles, being decorated with art in the form of sculpture, painting, and stunning stained glass windows, produced by hand by the master craftsmen of the times. In fact, one of Glasgow’s most well-known architects, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, created stained glass masterworks for many of his buildings that are admired to this day.

Thousands of Stained Glass Windows Lost Forever

However, the failing economy after World War One saw the demise of the city’s stained glass industry, which has never recovered to this day. In the sixties, the vast majority of Glasgow’s older Victorian style houses were demolished to put up high rises and just like that, most of the stained glass windows that had adorned them so gracefully were gone.

Then, during the seventies and eighties, the remaining leaded glass windows were taken out and replaced with more modern, heat efficient, double paned windows.

It was some of these windows that Martin Faith managed to acquire, bringing them over from Scotland to form his prized collection. Sadly, it’s been estimated that only around 2% of the original residential stained glass from that area still exists. As you might expect, a larger proportion of stained glass windows done for Scotland’s many churches is still in existence.

Perhaps during that era, the value and craftsmanship that went into this particular type of art was simply not understood, or appreciated? We can hardly understand this mentality, but Glasgow’s loss was our gain. And now, these windows will help to save children’s lives! Rather amazing, isn’t it?

As with all antiques, this collection represents a tangible piece of history. Glasgow’s history, to be precise, which is also Martin Faith’s history. As owner of the largest stained glass studio of its kind here in the U.S., Faith has the deepest respect for the history and tradition of stained glass making and the amazing artists who devoted their lives to it.

In fact, some of the pieces in his antique collection were damaged, and have been repaired and restored with the most loving care and attention. If you’d like to see some of these pieces, find out information about the charity fundraiser or how you might be able to purchase windows from the collection, click here

Of course, if it’s the highest quality, most modern, “custom-made-to-your-specifications” stained glass windows or door panels you’re looking for, then why not contact us today?

Antique Stained Glass Panels

Posted November 26th, 2012 by Martin Faith

At Scottish Stained Glass, we’ve restored hundreds of antique stained glass pieces from Scotland that are available to our customers.  These beautiful pieces embody the traditional methods and styles of stained glass, and they are all over 100 years old.

Each piece is completely unique to the time period and truly the style of stained glass.   Many of these windows came from old homes across Scotland; they often incorporated colored glass, something that is less common in American homes.

Antique Stained Glass Panels Make Your Home Unique

Stained glass panels are a great option if you may be leaving your current home eventually.  Instead of permanently installing the piece to a window, panels can be hung and then removed if you move or would like to simply move the panel elsewhere.  We can frame you panel, or place it directly inside of a window with removable clips.

When it comes to antique panels, you’re truly looking at something one of a kind.  Many of the types of glass used in these pieces cannot be replicated because of different glass techniques used at the time they were produced.  These pieces also offer unique aspects of design, and you may have never thought of a similar antique design if you simply purchased new stained glass.

One of the best aspects of these pieces is that they are an extremely rare piece of history.  While many methods that we use today are traditional, the types of glass and styles vary drastically from these historical pieces, and you won’t find anything like it.

Stained Glass Panels with Scottish Stained Glass

At Scottish Stained Glass our experts offer a wide range of styles and designs for panels.  If you’re interested in a piece that replicates a style of one of our antique panels, our designers will work with you through the process to find something you love.

Our expert builders have crafted our antique panels to be just as beautiful as when they were first made, and they make an interesting focal point in any home.  Our owner, Martin Faith, salvaged the pieces himself, and many have a story behind them.  If you’re interested in our antique stained glass panels, contact us today!

Fall Colors Make Stained Glass Even More Beautiful

Posted November 13th, 2012 by Martin Faith

At Scottish Stained Glass, one of our most popular options for homeowners is colorless glass.  This offers a classic look that will flow with any style of décor, and our colorless designs are something that you will always love in your home, no matter how your tastes change over time.

By choosing textured and beveled glass, you can create privacy for a window in your home with high visibility. However, one of the best parts about choosing textured glass is that it still allows natural light into your home, and with it, the colors of the seasons outside your home.

Most neighborhoods have beautiful trees surrounding each home, and while the leaves change, so do the colors that reflect through your stained glass window. Take a look at the picture below sent in by one of our recent customers, Carolyn.

Stained glass changes with the seasons

Carolyn had her stained glass window installed in the summer this year.  “I did not expect the surprising color changes created by the maple tree just outside the window.  I look forward to experiencing my window in all seasons,” she said.  Her beautiful window will likely change in color through each season, offering an interesting new look often!

While you may not have any color in your clear leaded glass piece, by doing so you’ll be able to better enjoy the natural colors surrounding your home.  These pieces offer unique character for any home, and natural light allows our windows to adapt to each season beautifully. Because our leaded glass gives you privacy without the need for blinds or curtains, you enjoy the light and colors around your home in a completely new way.

Scottish Stained Glass

We give you the ability to create something completely custom to fit your style and your home.  Our designers will help you through the possibilities of leaded designs to find your perfect window that will look great and give you privacy.

If you have any questions about how stained glass can enhance the beauty of your home, or to set up a consultation with one of our talented designers, feel free to give us a call or send an email today.  We can’t wait to show you how great leaded glass can be throughout the seasons!

Add Style To Your Home With Basement Stained Glass Windows

Posted November 6th, 2012 by Martin Faith

Basements may not be the first place you would think about installing stained glass windows, but I recently had a client who faced a not-so-uncommon dilemma. Windows in basements are an imperative part of the space. They allow for natural light to fill the room; otherwise there would be none. However, they also allow for an unattractive view, typically looking directly at a metal sheet, rocks, and eventually a collection of spider webs.

Custom Basement Stained Glass Options

Some people resort to curtains, which defeats the purpose of these windows. My clients, on the other hand, thought outside of the box. They decided to install leaded glass on their basement well windows. One of the most important parts about the design process for basement stained glass windows was choosing the colors and textures. We needed to use glass that would eliminate the view while not blocking or reducing too much of the natural light.

Clear or Colored Stained Glass?

This immediately eliminated the option of colored glass, as they thought that would deduct from the light provided. That left us with leaded glass to choose from. The texture we chose also had to create a high level of distortion, as the rocks and metal wall in the window well were in close proximity and a glass with a low level would still allow you to see what was there. The final glass choices in the basement leaded glass windows was a hammered glass alongside bevels and vecchio.

By utilizing stained glass, they were able to eliminate the undesirable view while maintaining the element of natural light. They also got to add a custom piece of art glass and a focal point to the basement entertainment room, creating a more beautiful space for themselves and guests to enjoy.

If you’re interested in enhancing the style of your basement windows, contact Scottish Stained Glass for a free consultation today!

Floral Style Stained Glass Windows Add Natural Beauty To Any Home

Posted October 3rd, 2012 by Martin Faith

If you are a gardener, a horticulturalist or just a nature and flower lover (and aren’t we all?) then an exciting choice for stained glass windows might just incorporate floral or foliage designs. Although this is one of the oldest and most traditional styles of stained glass work, it can also look thoroughly modern as well.

Here at Scottish Stained Glass, we’ve developed our own unique and elegant floral designs, including our wildly popular, vividly colored morning glories. Because we are based out of Colorado, we’ve also designed stained glass windows and doors using some of the flowers that are local to our area, including the dramatic Rocky Mountain Columbine, which is the state flower of Colorado, and the brightly colored Castilleja, also known as Indian Paintbrush or Prairie Fire.

Our own, unique signature collection incorporates modern images of the tree Colorado is most famed for – the lovely Aspen with its distinctive white bark, graceful limbs and fluttering leaves.

As we all know, real flowers don’t last very long once you’ve brought them home. But our floral stained glass designs are built to last for generations, using modern materials and techniques for durability and ongoing beauty.

Don’t Be Surprised If Your Windows Become Family Heirlooms

After all, the appeal of floral art is timeless and eternal, from the vivid masterpieces of Georgia O’Keefe to the famed Glasgow Rose made popular by Scottish artist, architect and stained glass designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Flowers simply beautify any space, and yet, a floral stained glass window can have various practical purposes as well. Many of our clients decide to add stained glass to their homes to solve a privacy problem. They might not want anyone to see into their home from their entryway, yet they don’t want to block the light with curtains or shades. The same holds true for bathroom windows. Stained glass is a perfect solution, offering beauty, added value to the home and enhanced privacy, all the while letting the sun still shine through.

Floral Stained Glass Design Options

Bring the beauty of nature into your home or office with a floral stained glass window or door panel. Floral designs can be literal or more stylized, using a more graphic design approach that offers a floral feel without actual flowers in the design.

Did you know that every Scottish Stained Glass window or panel is custom designed to your needs, your tastes and your specifications? Not only that, our stained glass installation process uses only the most modern, up to code methods and includes a certificate of authenticity and valuation.

Why not contact us today for a consultation about floral stained glass? A member from our talented design team will work with you to create the perfect composition to complement and enhance the beauty of your home.  Whether you prefer clear, colored, floral, geometric or a unique combination of styles, floral stained glass is a wonderful way to bring elegance and beauty into your home.

Painted Stained Glass as Fine Art

Posted August 24th, 2012 by Martin Faith

At Scottish Stained Glass, we work with innumerous tastes and styles for our home stained glass options.  While the most common type of stained glass is our colorless, textured privacy glass choices, occasionally we come across an uncommon request.

Recently, we had the pleasure of working with a client to add a unique, hand painted piece of stained glass to her entryway.  As you can see from the photos here, this piece depicts a beautiful young woman, actually an angel, with red wings behind her.

Creating Painted Stained Glass Art

For this particular piece, we drew inspiration from a painting by Dante Gabriel Rossetti called “La Bella Mano,” which depicts many angels together. Our client came across this painting and loved it.

“I wanted to subdue some of the harsh sunlight that was coming through the transom windows above my front door, but I wanted to do something creative with it,” said our client. By using this beautiful painting in the center, and surrounding it with textured glass, she was able to create the perfect look for her home; both fine art and functional glass.

The process of painting glass is a delicate art, and our expert painter, Nancy, is skilled in this process. Painting glass is a layering process in which the glass is painted, then fired, then painted again, and so on.  This particular piece was fired in a 1200 degree kiln at least 15 times, cooling for about 24 hours after each fire.

Fine Art Stained Glass

“Just the hair used three colors to create the right depth,” Nancy said.  This process actually melts the paint into the glass, making the artwork permanent.  If properly taken care of, a piece of this kind of glass can be passed on for generations and last forever.

Nancy actually restarted the process after her first few steps.  “I was using a technique commonly used in painted glass for churches, but it creates more solid lines.  After I saw how this would look on the angel piece, I decided I wanted something softer looking.  I really wanted it to look perfect,” she said.

Our piece of this beautiful glass artwork is finished, but our client is getting one more addition.  She’s having wrought iron installed to the outside of the window to match the exterior look of her front door.  “I’m very happy with all of the glasswork.  Everyone did such a great job, and I love the way it looks,” she said.

Adding Glass Artwork to Your Home

This project is a beautiful example of fine art stained glass.  Since every piece we build is custom, you’ll be able to actually choose a piece that you’ll truly love.  One of our most popular choices for hand-painted glass is to get a beautiful family crest to honor your family name and heritage.

If you’re interested in getting a painted piece of glass artwork in your home, feel free to give us a call or send an email.  Our designers and painter will help you find the right piece for your unique home, that you will love for years to come!

Stained Glass – Not Just For Windows but For Interiors Too

Posted August 8th, 2012 by Martin Faith
Interior Stained Glass

Most people think windows immediately when they think stained glass, but there are many beautiful uses for stained glass in the interior or a home or commercial space.

For homes, one of the most popular is stained glass panels installed into the kitchen cabinet doors. You can imagine just how this “classes” up a kitchen, giving it an elegant designer look. The stained glass can be designed to look antique or contemporary, depending on whether you are trying to complement an older, Victorian style home, or thoroughly modernize your kitchen, perhaps along with the purchase of brand new appliances. Stained glass kitchen cabinets can be the beginning of a theme in the home. How about stained glass in your curio cabinet doors, or in your wine cellar door? Or for a stunning and unique lighting fixture?

Stained glass is beautiful in an interior doorway, or even to create privacy or separation of different spaces as a room divider. This affords a barrier, yet it still keeps a spacious feel because the translucent glass allows the sunshine or room lighting to pass right through. It’s a wonderful choice as a divider in an office or workspace as well.

And for retail establishments such as bars, hotels, restaurants, stained glass has a long tradition. It’s frequently used as a back splash behind a bar, or to create a distinctive sign with the establishment’s name displayed in a way that patrons will not miss. Another popular interior use for stained glass is in a family crest or a plaque commemorating some special event or achievement. Scottish Stained Glass has done many plaques for golf courses and other establishments.

Another idea is a beautiful antique stained glass window or panel, hung either in a window or on a wall as a piece of art. Although if you hang a piece of stained glass on a wall, the sunlight cannot pass through it, it can still be placed where the sun will hit it and bring it to life! We import some lovely antique stained glass pieces out of Scotland. They are masterfully crafted and made with types of glass that are no longer made today. These wonderful slices of history all but command your attention and are guaranteed to add a unique “flavor” to a home or office.

Although most of our customers do wind up installing stained glass in exterior windows or doors, as you can see, there are many other creative and fabulous uses for this medium. Skylights, fireplace screens (just imagine the firelight dancing through a piece of stained glass, casting it’s rainbow colors and dancing lights all about your room), ceilings, wall hangings… where would you like to see stained glass?

Where ever you put stained glass, it will add life, energy, light and beauty and value to your space.

If this article has gotten your creative juices flowing, why not contact usand set up an appointment with one of our highly experienced and talented design staff? During your consultation, you can choose from any of our different styles and patterns and work with a designer to create a custom piece of stained glass, for anywhere in your home. Any style, any pattern, any size… all our work is custom designed and hand crafted exactly for you.

Beveled Stained Glass Windows: The Timeless Touch of Elegance

Posted July 30th, 2012 by Martin Faith
beveled stained glass windows

Do you love beveled stained glass windows? For many of our clients, it’s the beveling on their glass that they love the most, because that is what creates those gorgeous prisms of rainbow light dancing across their room, that sparkle and magic that they just never get tired of.

We are extremely pleased with the custom glass windows that you designed and installed in our home. They are a delightful topic of conversation… They truly give our home a sense of individuality. We enjoy the refracted “play of light” from the beveled pieces.”
-The Roy family

Here at Scottish Stained Glass, all of our artisans are specially trained in the art of beveling and creating gorgeous patterns from this type of glass. But what exactly are we talking about when we say beveling?

What are Beveled Stained Glass Windows?

Beveled glass refers to a fairly thick piece of clear glass that has had an angle cut around its entire edge, which is then polished to the smoothest imaginable finish. The glass we use is usually 1/8″ thick. This angled edge is the bevel and it acts as a prism, refracting sunlight or any other kind of light that strikes it. This creates interesting effects both on the glass itself and throughout the room it is installed in.

At one point in history, all beveled stained glass windows were made by hand, using different rotating wheels which ground down and polished these slanted edges. Today, the process is sometimes still done the old fashioned way, but semi-automated machines have also been developed to produce beautiful beveling for much less cost.

We’d bet your grandma had a mirror made out of beveled glass that you might remember from your childhood. Beveled glass evokes a wonderful feeling of bygone elegance; it’s classy, classic and completely timeless.

Many prospective customers are surprised to hear that clear glass designs account for the bulk of our stained glass window installations. Also known as leaded glass, these clear windows are popular because they provide privacy while letting the light through, and also have no colors which might clash with your current décor, or any new décor you might decide upon in the future. And if you put your home up for sale at some point, they aren’t any colors which might turn off prospective buyers. If you are considering a clear leaded glass window, talk to us about adding the sophisticated and graceful touch of beveled glass.

Beveled glass can stand on its own as the focal point of a stained glass window or door design, but it can also be combined with textured glass or the traditional colored glass in an infinite number of stunning designs and patterns.

Antique Stained Glass Windows Provide the Perfect Accent in Modern Homes

Antique Stained Glass Windows

Over the years Scottish Stained Glass has imported upwards of one thousand antique stained glass windows from Scotland, the homeland of founder Martin Faith. These pieces can be more than 100 years old, but we pick them based on the beauty of their designs and the mastery of the craftsmanship. They are extraordinarily well built, in fact the work of master craftsmen for whom we have the utmost respect.

The fact is that these antique stained glass windows cannot be duplicated because much of the glass used is of a type no longer made. But this makes these lovely antiques all the more valuable.

Why might you want antique stained glass windows in your home instead of having a brand new, custom made stained glass window made to your exact specifications? For the same reason that many people seek out and highly value antiques of any kind, whether cars, furniture or artwork – an intense love and appreciation for history, artifacts from a different era, and craftsmanship that is rarely seen in the modern world.

However, here at Scottish Stained Glass we pride ourselves on our craftsmanship, even going so far as to specially train and certify our stained glass artisans.

If you’re an antique stained glass connoisseur or aficionado, take a look at some of these stained glass beauties.

Now, perhaps you are wondering, “but what are the chances that one of these antique stained glass windows would fit precisely into my modern windows?” Although each antique window is custom made and one of a kind, the fact is that the windows in modern homes are usually bigger than the windows of old. However, this can work to your advantage, as we can install the smaller antique with hooks, to hang in the middle of an existing window.

It’s possible that you might find one of our antiques to be the same size as the window you’d like to see it in – but even if not, we can install it in a different way. And there’s yet another option… if you fall in love with an antique pattern, we can copy that for you, custom made to the exact specifications of your windows. You can have the look of antique stained glass, although by necessity it will be made with all modern materials. (We do not build with antique glass.)

By the way, if you are already in possession of any antique stained glass, from a window panel to an heirloom lamp, we would love to restore it to any degree necessary. We’ve restored many broken or damaged antique stained glass windows to their original glory, including several months work on the famous lobby’s stained glass ceiling at the Boulderado Hotel in Colorado. We take care to match the colors exactly, and will go so far as to remove every single piece of the glass, redo all the lead strips, and clean and polish the piece till it glows!

A Classic Piece of Art Deco Stained Glass

Feast your eyes on this stained glass masterpiece, arguably the most famous Art Deco stained glass in the country. What you are looking at is actually the ceiling of the Council Chamber in the Buffalo, NY City Hall. This spectacular ceiling was commissioned, built and installed in the twenties – they heyday of Art Deco design.

But this style has stayed popular over the years, and with good reason! The art, furniture and architecture of that period simply appeal to the eye, with their dramatic clean lines and bold design.

Although this piece is almost 100 years old, it remains magnificent, its design timeless. Honestly no photos can do it justice, so if you are ever in Buffalo please add this to your list of “must-sees.” And make sure to go on a sunny day! Although widely considered a Deco piece, the designer also paid homage to Buffalo’s Native American history and indigenous art as well by incorporating the image of a sunburst.

Of course, one of the most amazing things about Art Deco stained glass windows, doors and ceilings is that they look different and refract the light differently under different times of day and different weather conditions. Here’s another look at this spectacular piece of Art Deco stained glass under different sky conditions.

If you are a fan of Deco, perhaps you’d like to add a touch of Art Deco stained glass to your home, office or retail space. It’s unlikely that you’d want a stained glass ceiling in your home, (although you might definitely want one in a public building, a church, a hotel, or other public and commercial spaces!) but what about creating a similar effect with a skylight? Imagine the sun streaming through some beautiful colored, textured or beveled glass into your home, casting dancing colors and patterns across the floor, the walls and the furniture. An Art Deco stained glass skylight or window could introduce a touch of magic to your home.

Art Deco stained glass affords the elegance, class and defining style of a bygone era that still manages to remain modern.

In our twenty years in business, Scottish Stained Glass has designed many pieces in the Deco style for admiring customers. Your Art Deco windows or door panels can be as bold and dramatic as you’d like, or contain just a touch of color and a hint of the Deco flavor. In fact, for residences, 90% of our installations consist of clear, colorless stained glass, but even with that choice you could still include an elegant Deco pattern.

Here are some of the Art Deco stained glass windows we’ve done for our clients over the years.

Whether you long for the classiness of Art Deco or any other type of stained glass, from traditional to modern, Scottish Stained Glass has the experience to create exactly what you want. Aspen Stained Glass

Posted May 16th, 2012 by Martin Faith

Dare we way that our Aspen Stained Glass Collection is as spectacular as the real live ones outside your window? And although an individual aspen tree can live anywhere from 40 to 150 years, your stained glass could last even longer than that, becoming a family heirloom.

Please take a stroll through our Aspen Collection gallery http://www.scottishstainedglass.com/stained-glass-designs/signature-aspen-stained-glass/ and see if that starts to fertilize your imagination. If you have an idea, whether aspen related or not, our professional design staff will
work with you to see it come to life.
