Stained Glass Crest Artwork in Salt Lake City

Posted April 6th, 2022 by Martin Faith

Family crest stained glass is one of our lesser-known but wonderful stained glass creations. They are popular since they become valued family heirlooms. They’re also a type of -stained glass that’s quite adaptable to your needs. We can utilize anything from your lineage as a sigil, coat of arms, surname, or even your motto or slogan when customizing your family crest.

How Are Stained Glass Crests Created And What Do They Look Like?

Each family crest is entirely handmade in our Salt Lake City glass workshop. The most frequent form of family crests is octagonal, but the one we utilize is entirely up to you and your family members. These stained glass works of art are handcrafted and long-lasting, therefore they will certainly survive the ages and be passed down from generation to generation as a family heirloom.

Most of the stained glass family crests we do are panels that are hung on the wall.  This means you can move them with you from house to house to keep them in the family. They also come with a lifetime transferable warranty so they can be passed on to the next generation.  If properly maintained, these works of art will last over 100 years before needing repair!

Can I Give a Stained Glass Family Crest As  A Gift?

You can give a family crest stained glass panel to someone in your family. They’re both nice and thoughtful presents. These stained glass crests are generally made as panels that may be hung on a window or on the wall. As a result, you may wrap them up and offer them as gifts, just like any other product. The greatest aspect about giving the gift of family crest stained glass is that everyone in the house will appreciate it when they visit or attend family get-togethers.

Different Places Stained Glass Crests Work Well

We specialize in family heirlooms, but we’ve also done them for Salt Lake City schools, fraternal groups, and other organizations. So if you’re a member of organizations like these—a stained glass panel is something to think about purchasing.

Unique Stained Glass Applications

Posted April 4th, 2022 by Martin Faith

Church windows are probably the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word stained glass.  However, there are many different types of stained glass out there. Nobody understands this better than us since we are one of the country’s most prolific stained glass studios. In our 20 years in Dallas and most other major cities, we have crafted numerous stained glass pieces for various applications.

Read below to learn some about some unique stained glass ideas.

Unique Stained Glass Applications

Family Crest stained Glass: These are usually stained glass panels that hang on the wall. They’re often adorned with a coat of arms or crested motifs. In addition, the design usually incorporates the family name.

Stained Glass Lampshades: Tiffany Studios is famous for creating some of the most renowned stained glass lampshades. Lampshade stained glass was very popular in the 2oth century.  However, it is still popular today. Stained glass lamp shades are often seen in commercial spaces but work well in homes too.

Stained Glass Decorative Panels: These are quite fashionable at the moment. They’re free hung in windows or used as room separators over counters and nooks. The nicest aspect about them is that they’re usually very artsy and made specifically for your Dallas home’s décor.  Also, you can move them around your home as needed.

Stained Glass Wedding Panels: A stained glass backdrop is a fantastic method to take great photos for your wedding ceremony. These might be a free-standing panel or suspended behind where the bride and groom will exchange vows. Stained glass dinner signs are also popular, and they may be kept and passed down through the family as heirlooms.

Stained Glass on Cabinets: Glass cabinets look wonderful in the kitchen, but it makes clutter easy to see. Cabinet door stained glass is a fantastic option to get beautiful coverage. It’s customizable, so you can make it match your present decor and give as much or as little coverage as you desire.

How Long Does Stained Glass Last

Posted February 21st, 2022 by Martin Faith

Stained glass is one of those timelessly durable materials that last generations.  Stained glass made in the 20th century will typically last about 80-100 years before the lead starts to fail and put the window at risk of being lost.   However, as a stained glass owner, there are some things you can do to extend the life of your window for as long as possible.

Caring for Your Austin Home’s Stained Glass Windows

It is a good idea to think of your stained glass window as a piece of art.  As these valuable additions to homes age, they gain value you want to keep it looking as good as you can for as long as you can.  The key to the long life of your stained glass is proper maintenance.  Below are a few tips from us to you to help you care for your home’s gorgeous and valuable stained glass.

Prolong the Life of Your Austin Home’s Stained Glass With Regular Cleanings

Regular maintenance is the key to the long life and continued brilliance of stained glass.  Grime will build up on stained glass–especially because this type of glass usually has more texture that catches dirt.  By lightly dusting your home stained glass regularly, you stop the dirt from building up. To avoid build-up, regularly go over your stained glass with a duster or gentle soapy water, and remember not to use too much pressure.  Leave the deep cleaning to the professionals.

Prolong the Life of Your Austin Home’s Stained Glass with Regular Professional Cleanings

Having your stained glass cleaned by a professional once a year is a very good thing for your stained glass.  This is especially true if you are someone who forgets to do regular cleanings. A professional has the right tools and cleaning solutions to get your windows really clean. Also, they will get a close look at your glass to see if there are any issues emerging over time.

Prolong the Life of Your Austin Home’s Stained Glass by Having Small Damage Repaired Right Away

When the weather gets rough in Austin, it can cause minor damage to stained glass windows.  Although stained glass is durable small weather-related breakage, chips or scratches do occur.   These smaller problems are easily fixed and don’t cost very much to repair.  If you wait to have repairs done, it could start to affect the structure of the glass.  This could result in pieces of glass falling out and that usually means very expensive structural repairs.

Posted August 17th, 2019 by Martin Faith

When people think about stained glass, they typically picture colorful, traditional windows found in churches. Some people may be aware that there are different types of stained glass available, ranging from leaded, clear glass to traditional. Even fewer people may realize that there are actually 20 different types of stained glass! Here are some of our favorites:

The Different Types of Stained Glass

  1. Architectural: characterized as smooth on one side and textured on the other.
  2. Cathedral: translucent in nature, cathedral stained glass is typically made in one color and can be blown or machine rolled.
  3. Semi-antique: translucent, machine-made glass that has a consistent thickness and surface striations.
  4. Full-antique: handmade stained glass that’s translucent with rich colors, often having trapped air bubbles and pockets.

  6. Craquel: referring to full-antique stained glass that’s been dipped in cool water to cause an exterior layer of glass to intentionally crack for an alligator pattern.
  7. Fractures and steamers: also known as confetti glass, the shards of colored glass and thin glass rods create an opal or clear base.
  8. Glue chip: artisans utilize an animal hide glue to apply cathedral glass that’s sandblasted on one side and uses a special technique to tear flakes away to create a pattern.
  9. Iridescent: opalescent or cathedral glass that’s coated with a thin layer of metallic salts for a shimmer effect.
  10. Mirror: colored art glass and clear float glass are coated with a reflective layer.
  11. Opaque: great for stained glass mosaics, can feature one or more colors.

How Much Does it Cost to Repair Stained Glass?

Posted August 7th, 2019 by Martin Faith
cost to repair stained glass

Stained glass windows are a rare and elegant feature. Many churches and homeowners cherish their stained glass, so when it’s damaged, they’re willing to invest in repairs.

Sometimes, the window is a family heirloom and therefore it has sentimental value. If it’s part of a historic building, then there are cultural and educational reasons for its preservation. In some rare cases, if it was made by a famous artisan such as Louis Comfort Tiffany, Frank Lloyd Wright, or the Greene brothers, the window may be worth a lot of money.

In these cases, it makes sense to invest in repairs for the stained glass. But how much does this process cost? Well, that all depends on what types of repairs need to be made and how bad the damage is. Let us explain.

At this point, usually when the windows are half of a century old, they need to be cleaned and restored.

While stained glass windows may appear to look fragile, they’re actually quite durable. Years of practice and advances in engineering, technology, and science have provided modern stained glass artists today with a wealth of knowledge for creating windows that are stronger and more durable than they ever have been in the past.

Yet, there are unfortunate situations that can cause damage to stained glass or initiate the process of deterioration. In these cases, stained glass repair in Colorado Springs may be necessary both for safety reasons as well as to prevent the window from degrading further.

Stained glass repair is an intensive process, but is also an investment well worth it. If a full restoration is conducted, the lifetime of the stained glass could be extended tremendously, allowing it to last decades longer than it otherwise would have. For this reason, many churches in Colorado Springs opt for stained glass repair, especially if the glass is historic or valuable to the church.

5 Things To Do (Or Not To Do) Before And During Your Stained Glass Install

Posted July 10th, 2018 by Martin Faith

Best Practices For Homeowners Before And During Stained Glass Installation

So–you bought a custom-made stained glass window for your Salt Lake City home and you are over the moon about the design and can already imagine it in your home.  Fantastic! The stained glass window buying process can be super exciting and fun, especially when you work with stained glass professionals like Scottish. As professionals, we have created a list of dos and don’ts to make your stained glass install as fun, fast and favorable.  With a little bit of help from you, we will make your stained glass installation seamless and efficient so you can start enjoying your fabulous new window ASAP!

DO: Prepare The Area. While most stained glass windows are simple and quick install, it is still something that could involve dust, scraps, and chemicals/adhesives.  For this reason, you will want to take measures to protect your furnishings, walls, carpets or other features by covering them with plastic. This is something you should call us about if you have questions because sometimes we will only be in a tiny area and may need none of that at all.  Also, remove valuables– our installers are top notch but it is simply a good practice for you to be in when working with any contractor.

DON’T: Don’t try to help the stained glass installers or touch or lift anything: the window, installation tools, buckets or clothes.  This is really a precautionary measure to keep you from getting hurt but also a way not to inconvenience you. Just let the guys you paid to do the job and relax; their labor is written into our stained glass pricing.

DO:  Stick Around.  Most of our stained glass window installations are one day jobs. Sometimes it can run into a few days but it obviously depends on the size and scope of your job.  You will know exactly how long it will take up front regardless. Even if it is a multi-day project, you will be able to stay in your home while it is ongoing.

DON’T:  Let your pet around the job site.  Pets can be huge distractions during installs and it is never safe to have them in the area.  This is for the sake of you, your pet and the installer. Mostly everything we bring in with us is fairly safe but we are still dealing with glass and adhesives and other chemicals.

DO: Contact us with any questions or concerns.  The stained glass window you bought for your Salt Lake City home is something you paid to be excited for.  Don’t hesitate to ask us anything that is on your mind, because we want the installation to be a good memory for years to come, as your stained glass window turns into a family heirloom.

At Scottish Stained Glass we get a lot of questions from Denver homeowners about stained glass and frankly, we love to answer questions for potential and existing customers alike.  The questions range from ones about styles and colors to others about restoration and repair. One question we get quite frequently is from people wondering what the difference is between stained glass and leaded glass and if beveled glass falls into either of those two categories.  While in all reality, stained and leaded glass are more or less the same thing, we have gone into a little detail below about all three nomenclatures to set the record straight and inform you, the general public.

What is Stained Glass vs. Leaded Glass?

Most people in the US use the terms stained glass and leaded glass interchangeably.  While that is perfectly understandable and acceptable, in the stained glass industry we generally refer to stained glass as having color and leaded glass as being clear.  So, as it were, all stained glass can be referred to as leaded, all leaded glass is usually not referred to as stained. The difference, as you can see, is minute but knowing this may help you better communicate the design you are looking for on your Denver home.

What Is Beveled Glass?

Beveled glass is any piece of glass, almost always clear, that has an angled cut around the periphery.  This angled cut makes for a wonderful play of light of the glass and creates gorgeous depth and character.

What is Textured Glass?

Although leaded glass is clear and usually lacks color, it is by no means boring because it is often combined with textured glass pieces.  Textured glass pieces come in a variety of appearances from wavy designs called “water glass” to feathery textures called “glue chip”. Using textured glass in leaded glass windows is a great way to add a classic elegant feel to any area of your Denver home: entryways, bathrooms, kitchens and more!
