Wyoming Stained Glass Restoration

Posted February 23rd, 2017 by Martin Faith

Scottish Stained Glass is proud to provide religious communities throughout the state of Wyoming with high quality stained glass windows. We design and create stained glass for all denominations and buildings, including churches, cathedrals, temples, mosques, and synagogues. Our stained glass is created with the highest level of care and precision and therefore is both stunning and highly durable. When you work with Scottish, you will receive windows that can last hundreds of years and provide your members with a beautiful and delightful place of worship.

Our Most Recent Project in Wyoming

Scottish Stained Glass recently had the pleasure of working with one of Wyoming’s most charming and passionate religious communities. We were thrilled when the members reached out to us and invited us to be a part of the project for their church. Working with them to create something beautiful and meaningful for their community was a very rewarding experience.

The Design Process

After working out all of the logistical details for the Wyoming project, we began the design process. Accompanied by one of our most talented designers, Martin Faith, the owner of Scottish Stained Glass, traveled to Wyoming where he met with the owners of the church. Our designer then proceeded to draft a series of hand drawings for each of the windows that we would create. About 15 drafts were generated per window before a final design was settled on. We also later journeyed back to the church so the committee could choose glass samples on site.

The Results: Forever Elegant Stained Glass

We understand the value and importance that churches have to the community. Therefore, when we work on religious projects, we put extra heart and effort into our work. The Wyoming project allowed us to exercise both our creativity and technical knowledge. And it gave us the opportunity to create a meaningful relationship with members of the community. In the end, we were able to produce stained glass that would provide the church with beauty and elegance for hundreds of years and bring joy to their members.

The Beautiful Tradition Of Scottish Stained Glass

Posted January 17th, 2017 by Martin Faith

Historical Scottish Stained Glass

Deep in the Edinburgh National Museum, nestled artfully at the end of a long hallway full of some of Scotland’s most prized relics, hangs a towering window which, at first glance may not even catch your attention. But if the viewer stops for a good look and finds the stunning beauty of this prize window soon becomes apparent. A museum is the perfect resting place for such an intricately crafted stained glass window such as this, by one of Scotland’s leading stained glass artist–Douglas Strachan, whose many works include the north window of the High Kirk of Saint Giles and The National War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle.

The reclaimed piece was once a window on Montrose Old Parish Kirk, Angus and represents the intricate craftsmanship and lasting beauty of stained glass. This piece truly represents the distinct religious stained glass style near the end of the Victorian era. The beautiful meandering leading and prominent depiction of realistic figurines speak to its well-deserved place among history’s finest. While the stained glass of today may be drastically different in style and subject matter, the pure staying power of such a beauty never goes out of vogue.

The Glorious History Of Stained Glass Windows

Posted January 11th, 2017 by Martin Faith

Stained glass is an art form and an old one at that. While the exact origins of stained glass are not illuminated from historical texts, we can be sure that an archaic form of stained glass was in use by the 6th century. As with many pieces of artwork, stained and leaded were a direct result of a need for function rather than a desire for artwork. We can deduct that stained glass was come upon gradually when the making of glass was still in its infancy. Larger pieces of glass were hard to stabilize. In an effort to fit bigger pieces of glass in larger windows, and keep them secured, first holes were bored in wood and filled with glass bits, then rustic frames were constructed and eventually lattice and leading similar to what we see today began making an appearance. By the ninth century, glass on the windows of architectural structures had been well refined and used quite frequently. At the same time, lead strips used to join panels of glass became very popular. The earliest surviving examples are fragments from: Kloster Lorsch in Germany (9th century) “The Head Of Christ” And The Augsburg Cathedral (late 11th C. or early 12th C.) “Five Prophets Windows” Since the time of these beautiful, but crude early creations, the art of stained glass has incrementally become more sophisticated. Old gothic techniques were blended with new glass pigment breakthroughs and more and more stunning pieces popped up not only in Europe but in the middle east on mosques as well. Century after century saw new advances and more increasingly majestic works of stained and leaded glass artwork. Eventually, stained glass making turned into a form of painting on the glass itself as if it were a fresco and we see the “stained glass” of the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as more painterly imagery. However, with the advent of the Gothic Revival Period in the 1840’s there was a rediscovery of the Gothic process for blowing sheet glass which fortunately had been carefully documented. Stained glass similar to the very old stye of construction began resurging. The newly discovered “old” tradition is seen often in the Victorian period and continues today with use by relatively recent architects including Antonio Gaudi, Charles Mackintosh and Frank Loyd Wright. At Scottish Stained Glass we are proud to carry on the long and glorious stained glass craftwork. Although the techinques and materials have changed quite a bit since those early days, the desire to make something beautiful and lasting never go out of style. The Hidden Stained Glass Gem of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral

Posted January 10th, 2017 by Martin Faith

Santiago de Compostela Cathedral’s Stained Glass Masterpiece

Pilgrims on their way to one of the most famous cathedrals in Spain, Santiago de Compostela, are a common sight, especially in the Summer. Whether from piety or a sense of adventure, each year many people in Europe begin a long pre-determined pilgrimage that ends at this mixed era gem of a church. The Santiago de Compostela we see today is very different than the humble chapel first constructed as early as 7th century. Throughout the years the there have been Romanesque, Gothic and even Baroque additions made to the structure. Additions including but not limited to a stunning stained glass window, hidden away in the rich historical church today.

Unlike many churches, there is very little stained glass in the famed Santiago Cathedral. On a small part of the interior, buried deep among the many awe-inspiring architectural features, there is an iconic and gorgeous stained glass window, depicting a holy person on a chair. It towers above the viewer in a majestic manner with no pretense of intimidation, but rather a burst of stained glass magnificence. Because of the scarcity of stained glass features, the window truly stands out and allows the viewer a refreshing change up from the abundant stone and tile work throughout. It is truly a sight to behold and reason enough for one to visit this historically rich church.

Colorado’s Stained Glass Experts

It is small snippets of history like the stained glass in the Santiago de Compostela that inspire us at Scottish Stained Glass. While our windows are more practical and suited for ubiquitous applications, our adherence to old school traditions and quality are the same. When we take on a stained glass commission, whether for home or church, we have the highest standards of techniques both traditional and modern to create a timeless work of art. If you are looking to add stained glass to your home, chapel or church, contact Scottish Stained Glass for a free consultation. Our 25 years of experience and appreciation for the intricacies of artful stained glass design make us Colorado’s stained glass expert. Our high quality stained glass windows are instant classics and will be enjoyed by your family or parishioners for years to come!

The World’s Most Beautiful Stained Glass Part 3

Posted November 12th, 2016 by Martin Faith

The Middle East and even some parts of North Africa are some of the oldest still intact windows in the world. As beautiful as they are ancient, they represent stories and sometimes even lessons from different religions.  While the symbols and  religious significance may vary, one common thread in these windows is the intensely respectful  dedication to the art of form; fine craftsmanship being ubiquitous among them.    The tradition of religious stained glass windows being the peak of glass art expression transferred easily to the new world.  South America can make a case for some of the finest crafted stained glass windows the world.   The Cathedral of Maringa in Brazil is a shinning example of an absolutely stunning feat of glasswork work , and one in a markedly different style and tone than that of the old world.  As pictured below, the bright colors seem to rise, almost towering over the viewer in a color pallet akin to the bright foliage of the Amazon River Valley, pulling eyes upward in a prayerful gaze towards heaven.     Another South American stunner, he Santuario Dom Bosco in Brazil, is unlike any other stained glass you have ever seen.  The monochromatic magnificence of the cathedral stained glass windows bathe the chapel in ethereal azure light, giving it nothing less than a deeply moving ambiance.  Again, in the spirit of the new world, this religious stained glass makes use of abstract, almost Picassoesque shapes in sharp contrast to the old world tradition of literal figures.

Where ever stained glass is found, church, chapel or synagogue, the artistic and spiritual value is there.  These precious works of art and remembrance are of the utmost importance to keeping our history preserved.  These truths are something Scottish Stained Glass takes to heart. Since we work in stained glass restoration, stained glass construction, and stained glass repair, we understand the value of these precious relics. We have restored, repaired and built stained glass in Kansas for decades and our passion for all things stained glass shows. The World’s Most Beautiful Stained Glass Part 2

Posted November 9th, 2016 by Martin Faith

The stained glass windows in Europe, namely, Italy, France, England and Belgium are truly sights to behold. The colors, texutres and patterns are a hallmark of a bygone gothic and medevil eras. These illuminted works of art tell us a story in ways only the eyes can understand. However, stained glass spans many more centuries and geographies besides Europe. The Middle East is actually home to many awe inspiring works of stained glass housed in mosques. The iconography in these windows in obviously much different but ancient none the less. The Nasir Al-Mulk Mosque, also known as the “pink mosque” is a shining expample of exemplirary age old symbols on stained glass. While the mosque itself was built in the 1800’s the patterns and symbols are some of the oldest on record. As the picture below shows, the mosque includes brightly stained glass in its facade and traditional elements such as the Panj Kāse (“five concaved”) design.

Just as the Nasir Al-Mulk Mosque is known as the pink mosque, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Turkey is known, as the blue mosque for much the same reason–blue colored tile surrounding its stained glass. The Blue Mosque, constructed between 1609 and 1616 contains Ahmed’s tomb, a madrasah and a hospice. It is said, at night the mosque is bathed in blue as moonlight from the stained glass windows floods the mosque’s five great domes.

These mosques are wonderful examples of the how stained glass varies from religion to religion and from location to location but it’s breathtaking beauty stays the same. Scottish Stained Glass appreciates the beauty and history of these ancient stained glass windows. Since we work in stained glass restoration, stained glass construction, and stained glass repair, we understand the value of these precious relics. We have restored, repaired and built stained glass in Texas for decades and our passion for all things stained glass shows. If you are looking for stained glass repair, restoration or construction and live in the Denver, Aurora, Fort Collins or Colorado Springs area, contact us today for a free consultation. The World’s Most Beautiful Stained Glass Part 1

Posted November 7th, 2016 by Martin Faith

Stained Glass is an age old craft the likes of which have spanned centuries, a variety of religions, and numerous continents such as Europe, Africa, North and South America and even some parts of Asia. This tradition started in earnest over 1000 years ago and some of the ancient stained glass still intact today. The physical creation of stained glass is achieved one of two ways: by adding metallic salts to the silica during manufacturing or painting the color on the glass and then fusing it to the glass in a kiln. The colored glass pieces are then arranged to form patterns or pictures, held together by strips of lead in a rigid frame. The foundation for these techniques came about in Medieval Europe and as such, many breathtaking pieces still reside there. Most commonly these pieces are seen in religious or church settings like the glass in La Sagrada Familia, Barcelona, Spain The artist, Gaudí, made intelligent use of light and shadows, giving one viewing the work a feeling of ascension and joy.

Pictured below, The Siena Cathedral in Siena, Italy in unquestionably some of the most beautiful and well preserved stained glass from the Gothic era. Brightly colored religious iconography, surrounded by intricate pattern work borders grace the stained glass windows as one of many stunning elements within the cathedral. This intricacy is awe inspiring consider the ancient era in which these windows were built.

The stained Glass in Coventry Cathedral looks like a gateway to heaven itself when gazed upon. Light and color pour through the graphic rectangular window giving the church an almost unearthly glow.

Scottish Stained Glass appreciates the beauty and history of these ancient stained glass windows. How Stained Glass Can Add Value to Your Dallas Home

Posted September 14th, 2016 by Martin Faith

Often when people choose to sell their home, they remodel certain aspects of it before putting it on the market. This is because custom and modern fixtures can help increase the resale value of a property and, in turn, make buying a new home an easier, more financially comfortable process. Adding a new stained glass installation to your Dallas home can drastically enhance its curb appeal and give it a more competitive edge on the housing market.

Impress Potential Buyers with Custom Stained Glass for Your Dallas Home

While new appliances are certainly a good idea if you’re planning on selling your home, they’re also pretty standard and are already expected by most buyers. What will really make your home stand out and impress potential buyers is a custom designed, hand-crafted installation. Stained glass is a perfect option for your Dallas home because it can:

  • Increase the appraisal value of your home
  • Make your home more attractive to potential buyers
  • Enhance your existing architectural design
  • Provide a higher level of privacy for increased comfort
  • Create a look of elegance and refined taste

Things to Consider for Your Stained Glass Design

Before you decide on a specific style or appearance for your stained glass, you may want to consider a few things such as:
1. How long do you plan to stay in your home? If you plan on settling down for several years in your home, it’s perfectly appropriate to create a design that appeals specifically to you. However, if you plan on selling your home, you may want to opt for a more modern, generic style of stained glass.
2. Do you plan on redesigning your home in the future? Sometimes people like to install colored stained glass to match the interior design of their home. But if you think you may change things around in a few years, you may want to consider installing a clear stained glass window instead.
3. What level of privacy are you hoping to achieve? If a high level of privacy is important to you, then you may want to opt for a textured stained glass installation. Textured glass can significantly reduce how well outsiders can see into your home. Or, if you really like the look of clear glass, adding a bevel cluster to your fixture may create the elegant appearance you desire.

Stained Glass Windows – the Focal Point of a Home Renovation Project

Posted April 24th, 2013 by Martin Faith

If you are considering adding some stained glass windows to your house, we invite you to scroll through out stained glass galleries, which show photos of some of the custom, hand built stained glass panels we’ve designed and installed for our customers over the past twenty years. But nothing really says it like a video – so if you really want to know how stained glass could beautify your home, please take a look at these videos.

The first one is part of a renovation that was featured on the tv show, Rescue Renovation. It shows the installation of some gorgeous (if we do say so ourselves) kitchen cabinet door panels as well as stained glass windows. Imagine that in your home!

This next video is really fun, and quite spectacular. It’s another home renovation done on My Big Amazing Renovation, on HGTV. This Boulder, CO mountain home had a lot of exposed stone and wood walls, with not much space anywhere for the homeowners to hang any art. Stained glass to the rescue! For this home, we actually designed pieces to look like paintings, with pretty spectacular results… take a look and see if you don’t agree! The video shows a bit of the design process, a bit of the “building process”, some of the installation, and best of all, the joy and excitement of the owner when she saw the final finished products.

For a more in-depth video showing you exactly what the installation process for your stained glass windows or doors would like, take a look at this next video. Church stained glass

Although 90% of our stained glass window installations are clear glass, not colored, and most of them are residential, we have to admit that there is no place that shows off the spectacular beauty of stained glass better than religious institutions. Of course, churches are usually the first thing that comes to mind when someone hears the words “stained glass windows.”

Since some of the earliest stained glass pieces were found in Europe’s ancient churches, cathedrals and abbeys, and stunning stained glass church windows remain one of Europe’s major cultural attractions. Many of these windows rank right up there with master artists’ paintings; in fact many of them were inspired by the religious art of the day.

Some of the most striking and well known examples of church stained glass windows include the beautiful abstract designs in the Liverpool Cathedral, the extraordinary depictions of saints in the stained glass altar of the Trinity Church in New York City, and the scene showing the Virgin Mary as the Queen of the Universe in the Votive Church in Vienna, Austria. The Chartres Cathedral in France is famed for its stunning array of stained glass windows. And there are so many more…
