The History Of Stained Glass In Synagogues

The first thing that comes to mind when you think about stained glass is likely a church and a  Catholic one at that. This is understandable because a large proportion of stained glass windows adorn the windows of Catholic cathedrals large and small.   However, what you may not realize is, stained glass windows play a part in many different religions as a lavish way to display their most meaningful iconography–Judaism notwithstanding.   That’s right, stained glass on synagogues is a very common occurrence here in the states and around the world. The Jewish people have used stained glass windows to pay homage to some of their more important religious stories for hundreds of years and some synagogues even have stained glass windows that are famous and which were created by master artisans.

Since Judaism and Catholicism have some major historical and ideological differences, the stained glass iconography for temples and synagogues varies greatly from what you may see in a Catholic church.  However, the patterns, figures, and colors are just stunning and made even more so by the uniqueness of the Jewish designs. Beautiful, colorful plants and animals are often represented in Synagogue stained glass windows and a very common motif is the iconic six-pointed star of the Jewish religion. Not unlike catholic church stained glass windows though, there is also the portrayal of old testament stories, which are as lovely as they are ubiquitous. Much like other religious art, there are depictions of angels too.  When it comes down to it, stained glass is a captivating way to tell a story with a wildly unique artform; made even more beautiful by the deep faith that inspires it.
