How to Check for Signs of Deterioration

Most of the time, deterioration can be spotted with a thorough visual inspection. When stained glass windows start to deteriorate, the glass may start to bulge, crack, or fall out of place and the leading often appears misshapen. Here’s how you can inspect the windows in your Denver church to determine if stained glass restoration is necessary:

1. Place your hands on the glass and press gently. If the glass shifts when pressed, repair is absolutely necessary and should be conducted as soon as possible.

2. Stand beneath the window and look upward. Are the metal bars securely attached or have they broken off in places? If the metal bars have separated from the glass, you may want to have someone come out to inspect your window.

3. Inspect the glass pieces. Are they loose, cracked, or bulging? Glass that is loose is in danger of falling out and is a serious safety hazard. In this case, restoration may be the best option, especially if the glass is old or valuable.

Repair vs. Replacement

In some cases, it may be more cost effective to replace glass instead of trying to make repairs. We generally recommend replacement for newer glass or glass that has been severely damaged to the point where restoration is impossible.
