What Gives Stained Glass Its Color?

Posted December 16th, 2019 by Martin Faith

Stained glass is such a versatile medium that has been used for centuries around the world, offering beauty, art, symbolism, and function. The colorful nature of stained glass has enabled these multi-faceted abilities, creating stunning results. No wonder stained glass is still highly valued in modern art and society. Have you ever stopped to wonder what gives stained glass its color? All the different styles, textures, and colors found in stained glass are manufactured that way utilizing a certain process.

The Process of Creating Colorful Stained Glass

Colorful glass is actually achieved by adding certain metals during the development process. When glass is initially formed, it starts out as a very fine mixture of scraps of waste or broken glass as well as sand. These waste or broken glass fragments are referred to as cullet. Cullet means recycled glass. The mixture is sifted and put into a furnace with additional various materials depending on the type of glass it is intended to make. The cullet and sand have to be heated to their melting point in order to produce glass. Therefore, the kiln temperatures are usually over 2,900 degrees. Adding certain substances to this molten glass mixture produces different colors. Metal oxides are the secret ingredient for producing colored glass.

Metal Oxides that Produce Colorful Stained Glass

  • Cobalt oxide creates violet and blue
  • Cadmium sulfide creates yellow
  • Antimony oxide creates white
  • Gold chloride creates red
  • Sulfur creates yellow amber
  • Chromic oxide creates emerald green
  • Uranium oxide creates fluorescent green and yellow

Metal oxides are responsible for all the extensive colors made possible in stained glass. We’re proud to have the most comprehensive inventory of colorful stained glass options for developing any vision that our clients have in mind. Stained Glass Design Ideas for Modern Kitchens

Posted December 13th, 2019 by Martin Faith

For kitchens in homes here in Fort Worth, there simply is not a better design accent than a lovely stained glass window. You may think of stained glass as something old and dated and not to be had in the modern home. However, stained glass, particularly in kitchens can be incredibly modern. Below we have listed some of our favorite uses of stained glass in kitchens and why we think it gives such a modern feel.

Stained Glass Kitchen Cabinets

One of the most common uses for stained glass in kitchens is in cabinets. It is such an amazing aesthetic and truly eye-catching. The best part about stained glass as cabinet doors in kitchens is you get the modern open cabinet feel but with a little bit of coverage for anything that could look like clutter.

Stained Glass Kitchen Windows Over Sinks

The reason for stained glass over sinks in kitchens is to keep you from staring into your neighbors home or yard while doing your dishes. However, it just as well keeps your neighbor’s eyes out of one of the most “lived” in parts of your home. This is a place where you can really get creative and modern with stained glass in your kitchen. Nothing looks better with a crisp white modern decor in a home kitchen than the clean lines and stand-out pops of color–than stained glass.

Stained Glass Room Divider

A lot of people have kitchens that are open to a living area or dining room. This is an amazing setting for entertaining but often hard to divide seamlessly. Stained glass panels are the perfect addition to give you the slightest bit of separation and a ton of modern style! Bold, innovative and incredibly contemporary–stained glass room dividers are fast coming into vogue.

A Closer Look At Medieval Stained Glass And Its Significance

Posted December 13th, 2019 by Martin Faith

Medieval stained glass is uniquely colored and painted glass from the medieval period in Europe from the 10th century to the 16th century. A lot of this period of stained glass was made up of picture representation of saints, biblical scenes and rich iconography. While the reason for this is not exactly clear, the emerging color technology for stained glass at the time was surely a factor for this style. One of the first examples of colored window glass dates from 800–820 from excavations at the Abbey of San Vicenzo in Volturno, Italy. The medieval period, rich in colored stained glass, soon followed–less than 200 years later. [3

The Colors of Medevil Stained Glass

So, exactly what type of color was used that was so hallmarked to this period and place in stained glass history? Quite a few actually. Most of them actually stemming from impurities in the silica used for making the stained glass panels–some intentional–some not.

Medieval Blue Soda Glass

One of the most brilliant colors in Medieval stained glass is the blue soda glass. The early medieval glass was soda-based. Although quickly replaced with Forest glass there has been blue soda stained glass found in UK excavations at Old Sarum, Winchester and even some in France.

Red and Green Medieval Stained Glass

Green and red stained glass were likely made by adding copper– in the form of ore or copper filing.  Although the impurities in stained the silica alone usually accounted for a slight amber hue–this process allowed for deeper more pronounced red and oranges especially.

Silver Stain Medieval Stained Glass

In the early Medieval period, bold but still mostly clear glass was created by carefully controlling the furnace conditions to make them appropriate for reducing or oxidizing the area. However, later in the Medieval period (the 14th century) silver stain was introduced which made it possible to create a wider variety of glass hues.

The Importance of Medieval Stained Glass

Although Medieval stained glass windows were made long ago, they have had a huge impact on the modern glass we see today. This was the first era that not only introduced color into stained glass but rapidly developed many of the same colors we use today. Furthermore, with the use of color, this period in time ushered in an era of life-like representations of people, places, and things–not unlike much of what we see in stained glass today.

Why Is Church Stained Glass Important to Restore?

Posted December 9th, 2019 by Martin Faith

Church stained glass can offer so many incredible benefits that go behind just antique value. With so many advantages that can come from a single stained glass feature, churches usually want to keep theirs in the best condition. Did you know that all stained glass requires restoration around the 75-year to 100-year mark? This is true of church stained glass as well, meaning you’ll want to be timely about your restorations before replacement is required.

The Advantages of Church Stained Glass Restoration in Dallas

  • Antique value: Antique value can considerably impact the overall value of your property. Antique stained glass that’s restored is worth an exponentially larger amount that unrestored stained glass. Maintaining antique value is a better investment, providing a higher appraisal value than new replacement stained glass windows.
  • Historical value: Historical value adds exposure for your church and community. It expands the demographic of individuals who may be interested in seeing your beautiful works of art. This tourist interest can help generate interest as well as revenue for your community.
  • Sentimental value: Individuals in your congregation often find inspiration, hope, and guidance through stained glass features. They easily become a family tradition that’s treasured by future generations. Stained glass can also bring people together, providing that shared sense of awe.
  • More cost-efficient: Restoration is often more affordable than replacement. The more proactive you are with restoration, the less expensive it should be. A full replacement has significant expenses and eliminates antique, historical, and sentimental value.

What Is Dalle Stained Glass?

Posted November 24th, 2019 by Martin Faith
what is dalle stained glass

You’ve heard of Mackintosh, prairie style, art deco, and many other types of stained glass. But have you ever heard of Dalle Stained Glass? As a Denver resident, you’re no stranger to the beauty of stained glass windows. They’re part of so many of our historic churches and homes, especially in the Capitol Hill, Wash Park, and Congress Park neighborhoods.

But even in Denver, where stained glass can be found in abundance, “Dalle Stained Glass” is still an unfamiliar term to many. While it may be one of the lesser-known types of stained glass, it’s nonetheless one of the most beautiful. Here are a few of the distinct features that make this stained glass style unique.

Dalle Stained Glass – How It’s Made

Dalle Stained Glass windows are made in a similar manner to other types of stained glass. They employ the use of colorful glass and a frame or binding mechanism. Just like many other types, Dalle Stained Glass windows often contain images of landscapes, people, or religious symbols. However, what’s unique about Dalle de Verre is that the glass pieces are much thicker in size.

Traditional stained glass windows are made of glass fragments that are about the same width as an ordinary window pane. Dalle de Verre, on the other hand, is made from thick chunks of glass. This makes the colors more intense when the light shines through them.

Common Uses for Dalle de Verre

Dalle de Verre is used for many different types of buildings, including churches, homes, museums, hotels, libraries, and more. But perhaps some of the most common applications for Dalle Stained Glass in Denver include:

  • Bathroom windows and cabinets
  • Shower doors
  • Church sanctuaries

What Makes Dalle Stained Glass Unique?

Posted November 22nd, 2019 by Martin Faith

If you have Dalle stained glass on or in your Fort Collins home or business, you likely know it is different from other types of stained glass but perhaps not why. As it turns out, Dalle stained glass is a very unique expression of the traditional stained glass art form with some pretty significant differences. Below we compare traditional stained glass to Dalle stained glass so you can get an idea about what sets the two apart.

The Age of the Stained Glass Craft

Dalle Stained Glass: was invented in the early part of the 20th century–making it about 100 years old. Furthermore, we have a pretty good understanding of who invented and pioneered this stained glass method.

Traditional Stained Glass: this stained glass artform is old, if not ancient. Some traditional stained glass was even made over 100 years ago and we have no real idea who first made it or where.

The Thickness of the Stained Glass

Dalle Stained Glass: is very thick– sometimes well over 1” thick. It is made in big blocks and then sawed or hammered into size.

Traditional Stained Glass: is much thinner–today’s production glass is about 1/8″ thick. It is usually made the same size as the panel that will hold it and is thin enough to sand and cut with a glass cutter.

Type of Stained Glass Support Structure

Dalle Stained Glass: is held in place by a thick concrete and epoxy frame that is poured onto the glass as it sits in a sand box. This makes it incredibly sturdy.

Traditional Stained Glass:  Is usually made in wood frames with metal supports and the glass panels are separated by lead caming that is soldered in. While not fragile–it is not nearly as sturdy as Dalle stained glass.

The Restoration Process for the Stained Glass

Dalle Stained Glass: Since the concrete and epoxy framing is so durable, this type of glass is very hard to repair and restore. The entire stone like frame needs to be chipped off and then re-poured–very time consuming and expensive.

Traditional Stained Glass: Is much easier to remove and restore since lead caming is soft and can be peeled off. However, re-leading a traditional stained glass frame requires more artistry and care but requires less cleaning afterward.

What Is the Painted Glass Restoration Process?

Posted November 21st, 2019 by Martin Faith

Colorado Springs is known for its beautiful stained glass features. From churches to businesses, antique stained glass windows can be found in all kinds of different properties. Many of these stained glass windows have painted glass components that are gorgeous and one-of-a-kind. Historic painted glass offers significant beauty that usually improves the value of your property. Painted glass restoration is required periodically in order to properly preserve these pieces. Restoration enables another century of life, ensuring that future generations can enjoy these treasured windows.

The Painted Glass Restoration Process for Colorado Springs Properties

Painted glass restoration can ensure another century of life but requires certain experience and expertise to execute. The process begins by removing your windows and installing temporary ones. Your stained glass will be transported back to the restoration studio where it’ll soak for up to two weeks. This soaking process removes all dirt and impurities while making it easier for disassembly. Once we take it all apart piece by piece, the painted glass components are evaluated for restoration. We study all the brush strokes and time period that it’s from in order to perfectly replicate it. We always keep the original intact if possible, finding creative ways to make this happen. We take the time to create perfect colors matches and fire each layer of paint in the kiln.

When it comes to decorating a casino–any designer would agree–bigger is better. Since casinos are designed to pull in and keep people inside–they simply must be larger than life. This is as true for casinos in Las Vegas as it is to those that we have here in Colorado. From casinos up in Central City to those around us here in Colorado Springs–many have not only bright, over-the-top designs but an Old West theme as well. This is why stained glass, especially in funky, unique places is such a great fit. Below we have listed a handful of locations where this one-of-a-kind stained glass would fit perfectly.

Four Great Places For Stained Glass in Casinos

    1. Ceiling Stained Glass: When you put stained glass on a casino ceiling it is a real stunner. Bright, bold and oftentimes covering places with a ton of traffic–it will wow gamblers.

    2. Stained Glass Dividers: Great for privacy and as a wow-factor, stained glass dividers are the perfect fit for casinos looking for a stylish way to section off gambling spaces.

    3. Stained Glass Light Shades: Casinos always have a lot of light in them to help keep gamblers up and spending money. Since these lights are everywhere and are meant to draw attention to themselves, stained glass light shades are a way to make these fixtures really pop.

What Is the Painted Glass Restoration Process?

Restoring your antique stained glass can provide numerous benefits for your property. Whether you’re looking to restore the stained glass in your church, home, or business, this process can elevate your overall property value as well as the antique value of your glass. Many of these historic antique pieces feature original painted glass elements. Painted glass restoration is a different process that can only be successfully completed by a restoration artist. The right restoration specialist will be able to match the original technique, colors, and keep as much of the original intact as possible.

The Painted Glass Restoration Process for San Antonio Properties

Painted glass restoration starts with research. The artist will study the painted glasswork and do background research on the time period it was produced. When the stained glass window has been soaked in a proprietary solution then taken apart piece by piece, other stained glass artisans will focus on restoring the stained glass pieces and lead came. A restoration artist will focus on the painted glass pieces, taking the time to create perfect color matches. This process can be tedious, requiring a lot of experimentation and patience. Once all the color matches have been achieved, the artist will replicate every brushstroke with the intention of paying homage to the original artist. Each layer of paint has to be fired in the kiln, often using 8-10 layers to accomplish depth and shadowing.

    Historic Hotel Stained Glass Examples

Everyone knows about the beautiful stained glass windows in historic churches like Sainte Chapelle, Notre Dame, and the Chartres Cathedral. But hardly any attention at all is given to historic hotels with stained glass. This is an unfortunate oversight, since some historic hotels contain stained glass windows extraordinary enough to be considered masterpieces.

Stained glass is a natural choice for hotels. (Even here in Houston, we have more than a few hotels with stained glass.) It instantly elevates the look of any room, and its crystalline appearance is reminiscent of precious metals, jewels, and diamonds. It’s no wonder that it’s found its way into so many hotels over time. Still, nonetheless, these hotels have gone above and beyond to make their stained glass extra special.

Posted November 13th, 2019 by Martin Faith

As an owner of a historic storefront property here in Fort Worth and want to update it while maintaining its original character, the department of the interior has some sage advice.

According to the NPS website you should

    1. Become familiar with the style

    2. Preserve the storefront’s character

    3. Avoid the use of materials that were unavailable when the storefront was constructed

    4. Choose paint colors based on the building’s historical appearance.

Along this vein is the adding stained glass to your storefront window is a way to accomplish a number of things–beauty and authenticity.  This is because commercial establishments in the 18th and early 19th centuries were typically on the ground floor of buildings.  This made it difficult for retail establishments to stand out from their residential neighbors. Commercial spaces began implementing large bay or oriel windows made up of numerous small panes of glass set the shops apart from their residential neighbors.  In the early 20th century the use of decorative stained glass transom windows set off a trend of displaying the presence of a commercial/retail space. Therefore, using this same glass today in your historic storefront is about as authentic as it gets.
