Questions That Will Help Make Your Church Stained Glass Restoration A Success

Church Stained Glass Restoration Advice For Austin Churches

Make no mistake about it–having your Austin church’s stained glass repaired or restored is a fairly large project that will consume a good amount of time, and, depending on the size and scope of the project, cost you into the thousands of dollars range. But, don’t let that scare you away. Church stained glass restoration is a very rewarding undertaking and will likely bring your church and even community closer together. Furthermore, by asking yourself, your congregation and your church stained glass restoration company a few integral questions, you can very much streamline the process.

Questions To Ask Yourself Or Church Body

1. How Will You Raise The Money For The Church Stained Glass?
Cost is always an issue for churches because they often need to fundraise to get the funds for the restoration. Be sure to ask church members how far they are willing to go to get the funds:

Will church members donate themselves?

Will you do fundraisers?

What kind of fundraisers?

Are you willing to write proposals for grants?

2. How Will Decisions On Appearance, Budget And Timing Be Made?
Knowing who will be in charge of key decisions in the restoration process is critical.

Will There Be A Church Committee To Manage The Stained Glass Restoration?

Will there be a point person on the committee?

Who will be that point person from your church?

3. How Long Can You Realistically Be Without Your Church’s Stained Glass?
Knowing how long your windows will be missing and whether your church has upcoming events in which our temporary windows will not do, is an important part of the process.

If your church windows are not in place for the holiday season will that be an issue?

What about for summer or upcoming weddings?

Timing really is everything, so taking a good hard look at the best season for restoration is key.

Questions To Ask Your Stained Glass Restoration Contractor

1. Does Your Churches Stained Glass Need Repair Or Restoration?
Before you spend any of your valuable time and money on your church’s stained glass windows, be sure to ask and understand whether your church’s stained glass needs repairs or restoration or, in some cases, is even salvageable. So many things hinge on which type of job your church stained glass is in need of–timing, cost, where the windows will be worked on and much, much more.

2. Is The Restoration Company Insured?
Hiring a stained glass repair company that is insured is a must. Should an accident or injury happen on your church’s property, you could be held liable if they are not properly insured. Any reputable stained glass restorer will have full insurance and proof of it.

3. How Long Will The Restoration Take
The stained glass restorer you choose should be able to give you a good ballpark time estimate. Of course, things could change a bit once your Austin church’s stained glass windows are out and being repaired but having an idea of timing is important to your church’s events and fundraising efforts.

4. How Much Will The Church Stained Glass Restoration Cost?
As church stained glass restorers ourselves, we know that giving churches a rock solid estimate on cost is a must, since they will likely have to raise the funds from scratch. Any reputable restoration company will be happy to answer questions on cost and scope–readily at that.

These questions are a good jumping off point. For more information on these questions or if you have a few in mind beyond these, contact us at Scottish Stained Glass in Austin today!

Stained Glass Repair Solutions for Historic Churches in Austin

Posted March 13th, 2019 by Martin Faith
stained glass repair austin churches

Today, some of Austin’s historic churches are nearing an age where they are more than one hundred years old. In fact, one of Austin’s oldest churches, St. David’s Episcopal Church in downtown Austin, is over 150 years old. Many of these old religious buildings are very solid in structure, but they contain elements that need regular care, such as stained glass windows.

Stained glass, when it gets to a certain age, starts to lose its structural integrity from years of being exposed to the rain, heat, and climate conditions. Lead heats up, melts into a new shape, and then hardens once it cools down, becoming slowly distorted over time. This puts pressure on the glass pieces, often so much that they start to crack or fall out. By opting for stained glass repair, Austin churches can preserve their stained glass windows and keep their beautiful historic building fully intact so it can be enjoyed by future members of the congregation.

Tips On Fundraising For Church Stained Glass Restoration In Colorado Springs

Probably the biggest hesitation to getting stained glass restored here in Colorado Springs is the financial part. Most churches don’t have thousands of dollars set aside for such repairs and, understandably, have no idea where to get such vast sums of money. This is one of the reasons, we at Scottish Stained Glass are here to help. We have done a fair amount of church stained glass restorations across the country and have seen many churches successfully navigate the stained glass restoration fundraising process to bring their cherished windows back to life. Below we have listed a few tips on how to get started and, of course, we are happy to brainstorm with your Colorado Springs church individually to help you tap into local resources not outlined here as well.

Tap Into Your Church’s Enthusiastic Volunteer Resources

The first step in stained glass fundraising is mobilizing your church and working with those that are most supportive and enthusiastic about the process. This will help you throughout the process not just in the raising of the funds.

Decide Where You Want To Seek Out Funding

This may seem self-evident but some church’s we have encountered only want to get stained glass restoration funds internally from the church, while others are willing to seek help outside of it. Should you decide to look outside your church, be aware there are grants available from historical societies and even local businesses help out sometimes–especially if they are hosting events or matching contributions, not just writing a check. It is good to get the community involved in church stained glass restorations as preserving these windows is an investment in the community as a whole.

Get Creative In Your Stained Glass Restoration Fundraisers

Church stained glass is lovely and charming and as such can inspire great creativity and envoke participation across a number of channels. Of course, traditional fund drives like car washes, selling candy are great but something like a silent auction, involving local businesses or an ice cream social may stand out and garner more donations!

These are, of course, just a few ideas that we have seen churches across the county succeed in. There are so many things churches can do to get the money they need, including grant money. We advise you to call us for an initial assessment on your Colorado Springs church stained glass so you have a solid number to work for. Reach out to us today to schedule a visit and to take that first step toward preserving your church’s lovely stained glass.

3 Reasons Why Church Stained Glass is Well Worth Restoring in Denver

Posted March 11th, 2019 by Martin Faith

Church Stained Glass Value And Significance

If you have stained glass in your Denver Church and it is over 80 years old–it is probably time to have it inspected by a stained glass restoration specialist, like Scottish Stained Glass, to see if it is ready for restoration. The odds are it is. The reason we say that is–church and chapel stained glass created in the early part of the 20th century has a life of about 80-100 years. Knowing this, if you have church stained glass about this age, you probably need to have a conversation as a church body about whether or not stained glass restoration is something you may want to pursue. As such, we have listed 3 reasons why stained glass restoration churches, in general, is a good idea and well worth the effort.

Your Denver Church’s Stained Glass Has Historical Value

Stained glass in churches that is close to or over 100 years old was created in a magnificent time in Denver’s history. This was a time here in Colorado and across the US that saw many historically significant events and changes. As such, glass created in this era has deep historical significance and by allowing the glass to fall into disrepair or be removed all together robs not just your church but, Denver as a whole, historically significant artifacts.

Your Denver Church’s Stained Glass Has Sentimental Value

This is one of the biggest reasons churches turn to Scottish Stained Glass to restore aging stained glass windows–they are loved by the congregation. There is no doubt in our minds that when these lovely relics of the past were installed, the former members of your church, many gone themselves by now, worked hard to raise the funds to have them installed. This often translates into adoration and sentimental value in your church body to this day. In which case, it is well worth the time and expense of having your Denver church’s stained glass windows restored today.

Your Denver Church’s Stained Glass May Have Monetary Value

Not all antique stained glass windows are worth a significant amount of money in this day and age. However, depending on who made or which studio made them, they may well have a fair amount of value. There are many other factors such as the condition of the stained glass, the authenticity of former repairs and materials used in creating the windows that influence the current value. However, getting an assessment will bring some of these factors to life and help you decide it actual monetary value could be a driving force in having your Denver church’s stained glass restored.

Restoration Advice For Austin Churches With Vintage Stained Glass

Posted February 28th, 2019 by Martin Faith

Church And Chapel Stained Glass Restoration In Austin

Church stained glass restoration is an art form in itself, which is appropriate considering that stained glass is one of the oldest and most beautiful art forms in the world. Stained glass windows grace both private and public buildings in many different countries, most often in churches. We even have some here in Austin, TX. Austin churches with vintage stained glass may be looking for restoration advice on how to restore and maintain the glory of their stained glass windows.

Stained glass in church windows is a long-standing tradition of elevating the mundane – windows – into something glorious, telling a story, depicting important moments in the religion of the parishioners. Therefore, it is important to restore these church stained glass windows when necessary. Here are some key tips to remember when it comes to Austin church stained glass restoration:

Think of Stained Glass as an Original Work of Art

A stained-glass window should be considered as fragile and untouchable as an oil painting. Instead of a canvas, some of the world’s most-renowned artists used glass to create masterpieces. Don’t make the mistake of thinking of it as “just glass.” Respect must be paid.

Leave Well Enough Alone

Like any piece of expensive art, it’s best to leave it alone. Stained glass is built to withstand the passage of time and is part of the structure of the building in which it sits. Church stained glass restoration can be necessary, but not for simple cracks or fading, or even buckling. Make sure you check with an Austin church stained glass restoration specialist before touching anything.

Take Photos

A good first step in the restoration process is to take photos. Take a lot of pictures of your church stained glass from many different angles and at different times of the day. Many insurance policies now require this step, and these photos may come in handy during the restoration process.

Call a Stained Glass Restoration Professional

With such a significant piece of historical artwork on the line, it is vital that you consult a church stained glass restoration specialist in your area. As stained glass restorers here in Texas, our goal is always to get a beautiful stained glass, rich with history returned to its former glory within the church itself.  As it turns out, sometimes church stained glass is not able to be restored in the church itself–in cases where the church is being torn down. A good example of this is the stained glass that once adorned the Trinity Lutheran in Old East Dallas. To the people in the Dallas community, the glass, although old and tarnished, held a deep spot in their hearts and we could not be happier what the city of Dallas City cultural officials chose to do with it.

Stained Glass Church Restoration and Relocation In Fort Worth

In 2013 when the Trinity Lutheran Church in Old East Dallas was being demolished, city officials announced a surprising plan–to repurpose and restore the glass. The magnificent blue and turquoise panels, created by DALLAS ARTIST OCTAVIO MEDELLIN were removed from the church and restored by Michael Van Enter to their former luster but, since the church was no longer standing, the glass instead was suspended in four sections in front of ticketing hall windows ticketing at Dallas Love Field airport.  Now, this lovely church glass has a whole new lease on life and one the entire community can enjoy.

Church Stained Glass In Dallas For All Walks Of Life

Due to the forethought of some civic-minded people in Dallas, St Lutheran’s church stained glass has a whole new lease on life and one the entire community can enjoy. Church Stained Glass In The San Antonio: Rustic But Stunning

As mentioned in this series, church stained glass is something very integral to the United States. While it is a worldwide artform, that which was created here in the infancy of this country is unique in its own right. Since we restore stained glass ourselves, we have a deep appreciation and respect for the church stained glass artists, the churches and the congregations that have had these windows restored and preserved. A great example of rustic American stained glass in a church is the old and simple but nonetheless dazzle stained glass in The Little Church of La Villita In San Antonio.

The Little Church of La Villita In San Antonio

Located in the La Villita historic section of San Antonio, the cornerstone for The Little Church of La Villita was first laid on March 2, 1879. It was built by German Methodists, in the Gothic Revival style that is so very common in Texas. Although the church is now over 100 years old, it is probably more lovely today than it ever has been due to a restoration of the stained glass and the property, in general, to use as an event center.

As you can see below, this church is quaint but the stained glass is truly a sight to behold! The centerpiece of the entire chapel, a brilliantly colored symbolic cross seems to radiate light from the wall, lighting up the church and instilling joy in the viewer.

The surrounding chapel is lovely and not over-adorned and a few smaller stained glass windows grace the doors but this chapel, in its minimalism is the perfect example of how breathtaking stained glass comes in all sizes, shapes, and denomination.

New Life After Church Stained Glass Restoration

Today the church is used by locals for small, intimate weddings and we believe there truly could not be a better way to celebrate love, than beneath a work of stained glass art that was truly a labor of love itself! At Scottish Stained Glass In San Antonio, each day is truly a joy knowing we are doing our part to keep this country’s historic stained glass windows, like these and others, intact for future viewers. As we restore and create new windows, our hope is one day, others will work to preserve our labors of love too! A masterpiece of church stained glass it has an incredible succession of 17 glass and aluminum spires — each composed of 100 tetrahedrons, which make up the entire enclosure of the entire ceiling. Stained Glass Restoration Stories: Bethel A.M.E.

Posted February 15th, 2019 by Martin Faith

What Church Stained Glass Restoration Means To A Community

Church stained glass restoration, although sometimes expensive, is critical to the history of American churches of all denominations, breathes new life into congregations and brings absolute joy to parishioners. As such, it is something for churches here in Denver and across the country with stained glass windows to consider, whether those windows are small and simple or majestic and looming.

A Stained Glass Restoration Rich With History

A good example of how enriching stained glass restoration on a church can be is that of the sanctuary restoration of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Huntington in NY. This lovely church has the distinction of being Huntington, NY’s oldest African American church; something that carries with it a very deep-rooted history both of the area and of African American culture within it. This particular program cost about $50,00 and took two years but meant a lot to the parishioners, as they were preserving more than just their windows and culture but paying homage to those bygone parishioners that put so much into their church and their original stained glass windows.

The Deterioration Of The Stained Glass Windows

As you can see from the pictures below the stained glass windows in the sanctuary at Bethel A.M.E. are astounding and still true to the style of the time during their installation in 1924. But, over the years the condition of these once striking stained glass windows had deteriorated and in early 2016, Rev Larry D Jennings decided it was time to do something about their very bad condition; not only because the window truly needed it but because of the historical value and as a respect to the original generosity of those who paid, and likely sacrifice for them to be installed.

Paying For The Church Stained Glass Restoration

Paying for stained glass restoration can be expensive and finding funds a challenge. But, luckily for Bethel A.M.E. a town historian, Robert Hughes sought out grants from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation for $20,000, them the Sacred Sites program of the New York Landmarks Conservancy for $10,000; and finally The Gerry Charitable Trust for $5,000. Tips on How to Keep Your Dallas Church Stained Glass in Great Condition

Posted February 1st, 2019 by Martin Faith

Stained glass plays a major role in any church. Congregation members draw inspiration from these pieces of art during each service and start implementing them into their daily routines and family traditions. Stained glass can also have a significant impact in Dallas communities, providing great historic value. When properly maintained, stained glass can last for centuries. While stained glass will always need to undergo restoration every 75 years to 100 years, there are definitely things churches can do to keep their stained glass in great condition.

Regular Cleaning Tips for Dallas Church Stained Glass

Cleaning stained glass does require different cleaning methods than regular glass windows. It is important to never use anything abrasive when cleaning your stained glass– use a soft cloth for all regular cleanings. For the cleaning solution, it is important to never use anything acidic or with vinegar. Acidic cleaning agents will damage painted glass and accelerate the deterioration of the lead came, which supports the window. We recommend purchasing a neutral PH cleaner or mild soap and mixing it with distilled water to create a very gentle cleaner for your stained glass windows. Regular cleaning of protective glass panels, window frames, and any supports is vital in ensuring these integral parts remain in great condition as well.

Minor Repairs in Between Restorations for Your Dallas Church Stained Glass

Minor damage can happen at anytime. Whether vandalism or severe weather has impacted your stained glass, minor damage can always lead to bigger problems. The good news is that minor repairs can typically be completed without removing your stained glass windows. If you notice any minor damage and are interested in seeking repairs before more expensive restoration is required, we’re here to help!

Signs that Your San Antonio Chapel Stained Glass is Ready for Restoration

Posted February 1st, 2019 by Martin Faith

San Antonio chapels definitely house some of the most gorgeous religious stained glass windows in Texas. With beautiful, antique stained glass that’s been enjoyed for multiple generations, these windows and panels are definitely cherished by their communities. Did you know that stained glass needs to be restored every 75 to 100 years in order to keep them intact? Often times, clergy or congregation members will begin to notice certain signs of deterioration but won’t be sure of what to do. Catching these signs and being proactive about restoration can save you thousands during the process.

Stained Glass Signs of Deterioration in San Antonio Chapels

If you notice any of these signs of deterioration, it is time to get your stained glass checked out! When it comes to the glass itself, if you see any cracks, missing pieces, warped shapes– concave or convex, discoloration, etc. starting the restoration process is vital. For the lead came, which is the framework supporting the individual glass pieces, if the lead is beginning to soften, deteriorate, mishapen, or cause white dust that appears on the window itself, these are other signifiers that your chapel stained glass is ready for restoration. There was a time period when stained glass studios thought plexiglass would be a great idea for adding a protective layer for stained glass. This has resulted in heat trapped between the stained glass and plexiglass causing yellowing and advanced deterioration.

Finding the Right Stained Glass Studio for Religious Restoration

When it comes to choosing a stained glass studio for restoration, it’s vital to find the right contractor that has experience, great references, and the technical skill. Choosing a cheap stained glass studio can really affect the results, leading to more costs down the line.

Does Your Kansas City Church Stained Glass Need Restoration? Find Out Here!

Posted January 29th, 2019 by Martin Faith

Stained Glass:  Durable But Needs Regular Restoration And Repair

Stained glass is actually an extremely durable material, made only better by the fact that it takes color through paints, pigments, and dye. This means it is a wonderful medium for adorning churches and giving it that coveted ethereal feel. Just because stained glass is durable, does not mean it never needs repair though. The fact is church stained glass windows should be repaired or restored every 80-100 years. If your church has stained glass and you wonder if it may soon need repair, read on to find out what surefire signs of disrepair to look for on your chapel’s stained glass and keep it looking lovely and intact for your congregation for decades to come.

Gaps In Your Church’s Stained Glass Window Showing Daylight

An obvious sign it is time to repair your Kansas City church stained glass are gaps of visible light through your window. This is when you can actually see through these holes outside. They can be small or large and you will find them between the glass and the leading or frame. The reason these gaps appear is because there is stretching of the lead and the issue with this is–the surrounding glass panels are no longer held securely in place. The possibility of a piece of glass falling out of the window is high and stained glass professional should be brought in to take a look.

Church Stained Glass That is Buckling, Bowing And Sagging

If the stained glass windows in your church are buckling, bowing, bulging or sagging, your windows are in bad repair and could collapse. This, of course, is a worst case scenario but any falling glass is bad glass and could harm a church member. This type of damage is not about the glass itself decaying but rather the wood frame, which has been expanding and contracting over time and is losing strength. In the long run, these rapid shifts in the frame take a big toll on the lead and cause it to lose strength too. This is an issue that needs to be repaired soon to immediately.

Chips And Cracks On The Stained Glass Of Your KC Church

The most frequent repair church stained glass windows need (and the least “dangerous”) are to chips and cracks in the glass. Not a fix that is pressing for safety reasons but because they affect the beauty and luster of your church’s stained glass. Keep in mind that cracks in glass are sometimes an indicator of “stress zones” in the glass from a failing frame. So, if you notice cracks getting bigger or increasingly popping up, contact a professional stained glass repair company like Scottish Stained Glass In Kansas.

Featured Modern Leaded Glass Project: Altar’d State Boulder

Posted December 7th, 2018 by Martin Faith

Scottish Stained Glass is honored to have been chosen to manufacture and assemble the complete leaded glass storefront in addition to interior leaded glass features in Altar’d State’s newest location in Boulder. Altar’d State is a faith-based national retailer with over 100 boutiques throughout thirty states. Altar’d State is renowned for its branded unique fashion experience that’s illuminated through gorgeous, modern stained glass displays in many of their locations. With a powerful mission behind their retail experience, Altar’d State prioritizes giving back to the community through child sponsorships, team volunteer work, and charitable giving. Partnering with such an illustrious, philanthropic organization was a really special experience and we’re humbled to have contributed to their specialized shopping experience.

Contemporary Leaded Glass Features: Manufacturing and Assembly

Our team of stained glass artisans worked hard to complete the scope of this project within the strict timeline given. Once Altar’d State obtained their permits, we had exactly three weeks to complete the entire leaded glass project before the installation deadline. The project was comprised of a complete leaded glass storefront, a 12-foot privacy leaded glass interior feature, as well as an 8-foot leaded glass rotunda ceiling feature. All three components totaled 400 square feet of custom leaded stained glass. Since the storefront didn’t exist yet, we had to build all of the leaded glass features based on the given plans and dimensions.

One of the more technical aspects of this project was the curved leaded glass components. We had to calculate the exact radius of each curved leaded glass feature in order to make two proper molds for each piece. With such a limited time frame, we had no room for error. Each piece had to be created perfectly according to the given dimensions. Our 15-person team worked diligently and precisely and when it came it installation time, all leaded glass pieces fit perfectly.

Installation Process and Final Result of Our Contemporary Leaded Glass Project

Working alongside numerous other contractors and designers, we all simultaneously came together to create this incredible store from the ground up. While our team meticulously installed each piece of leaded glass, others were installing copper cladding and metal framing. As we pieced together the leaded storefront, designers were creating interior clothing displays and organizing inventory. The entire production worked seamlessly together to accomplish something that looked like it should’ve taken months.

The 12-foot leaded glass feature was installed directly in front of the dressing rooms to provide a beautiful focal point while also offering privacy. Altar’d State had customer-written prayer books turned into custom wallpaper that adorned the walls behind our leaded glass, providing a stunning contrast. On the other side of the 12-foot leaded glass feature, we installed the 8-foot leaded glass dome as a rotunda feature. With lighting incorporated into the center of the leaded glass dome, an almost angelic feel transcends the space.

Scottish Welcomes You to Visit Altar’d State Boulder

We are proud of this contemporary leaded glass project and welcome our clients to visit Altar’d State located in Boulder’s 29th Street Mall. It is truly a one-of-a-kind shopping experience complete with beautiful artistic features. If you have any questions regarding these leaded glass features or would like to discuss your upcoming stained glass project, please contact us!

How to get started with your Fort Worth home’s antique stained glass restoration project

Posted November 17th, 2018 by Martin Faith

Preparation: The Key To A Smooth Stained Glass Restoration

So you have decided to get the stained glass in your Fort Worth home restored. Good for you! You will be astonished at the life and luster that comes with stained glass restoration. Now that the decision is made, next will come the work and, like any job involving renovations and/or a contractor coming into your home, there are some things you can do to prepare your Fort Worth home. Below we have outlined a few suggestions for your preparations based on questions we get and advice we give to our customers.

How To Prepare For A Stained Glass Restoration

Should I stay in the house or leave?

We hear this question frequently and for something like home stained glass restoration, the answer is almost always–go ahead and stay. For the most part, stained glass restoration involves cleaning and scrapping. In the cases when more in-depth repair work needs to be done, most times we will be doing it off-sight in our studio.

Clear The Area Around Your Stained Glass Window

Since stained glass is breakable (although, no more so than normal glass) you will want the area to be completely clear so your stained glass restoration specialist can maneuver as easy as possible. Also Clear all ledges, shelves and in particularly, stairs.

Protect Your Furnishings And Keep Kids And Pets Away

Make sure you take a good look at the surrounding furnishings and fixtures near the stained glass window and cover anything you cannot move. Although most of the cleaners used to restore your stained glass are non-toxic– things like water stains are possible if things aren’t covered. Also, make sure to keep kids and pets away from the work area. Things like ladders, buckets, dirty rags, and even loose glass are all typical worksite items that could be dangerous for children and animals–even adults too!

Most importantly, if you have any question on stained glass restoration and/or crews, make sure to ask. At Scottish we are happy to answer any questions before, during and even after we restore your Fort Worth home’s stained glass. Contact us today for more information on stained glass restoration!

Posted November 1st, 2018 by Martin Faith

What Is Modern Stained Glass?

There are many ways stained glass can be styled, and artisans are getting more creative now than ever. Stained glass is an ancient art, with some of the oldest pieces being featured in Catholic churches, Victorian mansions, and palaces of Europe. Modern artists are combining the best features of traditional stained glass with a new twist to create delightful new pieces that could never before be imagined.

There are more ways to imagine stained glass for your Kansas City home, business, or church so it stands out whether it is located in River Market or Brookside. Take a look at some of these examples of modern stained glass from the New York Times and My Modern Met to inspire your next property update.

The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision is a bold example of modern stained glass. In this behemoth work of stained glass, Dutch architects Willem Jan Neutelings and Michiel Riedijk critique of advertising and marketing, and reaffirm art for art’s sake.

Graphic Design Inspired Stained Glass

UK-based artist Flora Jamieson creates modern stained glass pieces inspired by graphic design, nature, organic forms, and geometry. She fuses her tastes which are more contemporary with the traditional art of stained glass to create colorful and cheery art like this one of birds and animals on a tree. Her favorite part of the stained glass crafting process is “selecting just the right tones and shades so that they sing out next to each other.”

Stained glass windows in churches all over the world have been capturing our attention for centuries. If you are a true stained glass lover, you are probably aware of the following churches that are renowned for their stained glass masterpieces. However, if you haven’t been to the following churches and cathedrals, start making your travel plans now.

Here are three of the best churches for stained glass that should be on every stained glass lover’s bucket list!

Religious Stained Glass Restoration Guide

Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, Maryland, is a large, Gothic Revival-style church built in 1870. The church features 11 Tiffany windows, in addition to several others. One of the famed stained glass windows created by Louis Comfort Tiffany is The Annunciation to the Shepherds. Tiffany used methods that had never been used before, like blending colors while the glass was still molten, producing a milky or opalescent effect. These stained glass windows must be seen in person to be truly appreciated.

There are many beautiful churches and cathedrals in Paris, but the Sainte-Chapelle, on Paris’s central Ile de la Cité, is a must-see for stained glass lovers. Sainte-Chapelle houses 15 tall stained glass windows which depict tales from the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. For the patrons of the Middle Ages, this was their only method of learning the Holy Scriptures.

Augsburg Cathedral is another church that should be on every stained glass lover’s bucket list. This Romanesque Church in Augsburg, Germany, in the heart of Bavaria, boasts stained glass portraits of Moses, Daniel and other Biblical figures that have withstood the test of time.
