Posted April 16th, 2018 by Martin Faith

The Difference Between Stained, Leaded and Beveled Glass

At Scottish Stained Glass we get a lot of questions about a subject we are passionate about– stained glass.  We love answering those questions for potential and existing customers alike to help them along their way to a more beautiful home. The questions are on various topics: styles, colors, restoration vs. repair.  One question we get frequently is what the difference is between stained glass and leaded glass and where beveled fits in. As it turns out–stained and leaded glass are more or less the same thing. However, read below for more details on these types of stained glass and for more information on our craft.

What is Stained Glass vs. Leaded Glass?

For homeowners like yourself,  the terms stained glass and leaded glass interchangeably.   However, in the stained glass industry, we generally refer to stained glass as having color and leaded glass as being clear.  So, while all https://photos.hgtv.com/photos/stained-glass-stained glass is leaded, all leaded glass is not stained. The difference is tiny but knowing this may help you better communicate exactly what you are looking for on your Fort Collins home.

What Is Beveled Glass?

Beveled glass is a piece of glass, usually clear, that has an angled cut around the periphery.  This angled cut helps reflect light in beautiful ways creates gorgeous depth and character.

What is Textured Glass?

Although plain leaded glass is clear and usually without color, it is hardly dull.  This is because it often has textured glass pieces in it. Textured glass pieces have appearances all the way from wavy designs (called “water glass”) to feathery textures called “glue chip”.  Using textured glass in leaded glass windows is a great way to add an air of elegance to any area of your Fort Collins home: entryways, bathrooms, kitchens, sidelights and more.

Should My KC Church Have Its Stained Glass Restored Or Replaced?

Posted April 10th, 2018 by Martin Faith

Church Stained Glass: Restore Or Replace?

When it comes down to the question of stained glass restoration for churches, and whether or not it is worth the sometimes long and expensive repair process,  it really comes down to a number of factors that churches must consider. That being said there is no “one or “right” answer, and the decision lies with the church staff and congregation as a whole.  However, to help you better understand what is at stake when your  Kansas City church is beginning restoration talks, we have outlined a few things to think about.

Consider The Monetary Value Of Your Church’s Stained Glass

As beautiful as stained glass is, it is just as valuable.  Value can come from a variety of areas as you will see, but the actual monetary value is something to consider.  In terms of value, many things play a factor in how much your church stained glass may be estimated at, like condition, age, and artisan.  However, a general rule of thumb is– a restored original piece of antique stained glass will be about 4X more valuable than that of a new/replaced piece.

Consider The Sentimental Value Of your Church’s Stained Glass

If you have old stained glass in your Kansas City church, it is likely that it has seen its fair share of blessed events take place under its beautiful light.   There are probably people in your church who were married beneath it or others who said their final goodbyes. In cases like this, where you have many parishioners who cherish the glass for sentimental reasons, the fact is, there is likely nothing new that can replace it.

Consider The Historical Value Of Your Church’s Stained Glass

Even beyond the monetary or sentimental value, may lie value in the time period or craftsman who created your glass.  Glass made in the early 20th century is very well and uniquely crafted and holds deep historical value in regards to early American history.   If your church’s stained glass is still in relatively good repair and intact, it may have been made by a stained glass master of the time, which makes it more valuable in and of itself.

How To Care For Stained Glass Windows in Your Austin Home

Posted April 10th, 2018 by Martin Faith

Stained Glass Care For Austin Homeowners

Many homeowners with stained glass windows may not realize it but the glass in stained glass isn’t any weaker than that of any other window.  It is just much more difficult to manufacture, repair and replace, should something happen to it. Also, stained glass is a piece of art, meaning, you want to keep it looking its best for as long as you can.  It is for these reasons that it is essential to properly care for and maintain your glass. Below are a few tips as to how to do this and provided your stained glass was properly crafted in the first place, the stained glass windows in your Austin home could it 80-100 years before needing repair.

Combat Stained Glass Damage By Cleaning Your Glass

Regular maintenance is essential for the long life and luster of your glass.  Dirt and debris will build up on glass, just like they will anywhere else. This makes glass dull and could lead to so much build up that getting your glass’s clarity back is expensive and time-consuming.  A light brush with a duster or gently soapy water is all you need– and very little pressure.

Combat Stained Glass Damage With Regular Professional Cleanings

Having your stained glass cleaned by a professional once a year is a good idea, especially if you are one to forget monthly cleanings.  A professionally, like Scottish Window Tinting, has the right tools to reach high windows, the proper cleaning solvents, and just the right touch, so as not to scrub too hard and break the glass.  You will be shocked at the difference in the vibrancy of your glass after your professional cleaning is done and your stained glass is back to its original luster!

Keep An Eye Out For Small Damage

When weather gets rough it can cause minor damage to many things including stained glass.  Also, even though stained glass is durable, accidents happen or time takes its toll on your glass causing breakage, chips or scratches.   Thes smaller problems can be fixed easily and quickly and don’t cost a ton. However, if you wait until these become bigger problems, it could cost you a lot.  What may seem like a small fissure or divet now, could quickly turn into a bigger problem, so always keep an eye on your stained glass and inspect it regularly for damage.  If you see damage be sure to call a professional stained glass repair company, like Scottish Stained Glass, right away!

Will Stained Glass Hold Up To Denver Weather?

Posted April 10th, 2018 by Martin Faith

Is Stained Glass Right For Denver Homes?

Many homeowners in the Denver area, when considering stained glass, are concerned about whether or not the climate of Denver is too harsh for it.  Not unlike regular glass, stained glass windows can be damaged and the issue lies in the fact that it is much more expensive to replace. The good news is, however, stained glass is very durable and holds up to regular weather quite nicely.  While hail is always a threat here, your stained glass is no more likely to break from hail as any of your other windows. Additionally, since Denver is so dry, it actually helps keep frames from rotting as quickly, which is usually where you will see the fastest degradation on a stained glass window. In all reality, a properly crafted and cared for stained glass will last 80-100 years before needing repairs.  For more information on what this means read on.

Well-crafted Stained Glass Windows Are More Durable

As we mentioned before a well-crafted stained glass window is very durable.  This includes the use of quality glass making and leading materials as well as a carefully constructed frame.  Another area where premature damage will occur is during the installation. If a stained glass installer does not thoroughly clean the glass, permanent smudges may be visible or, if moisture is trapped between the glass panel and an outer window water damage may occur.   What this really means though is– a stained glass expert, like us, is your first and best defense against your Denver home’s stained glass windows being damaged.

Stained Glass Maintenance To Prevent Damage

You can keep your stained glass from accruing damage by lightly cleaning it regularly to remove dirt and debris from dust and smog, inside and out.  These substances can dull the stained glass and reduces its natural luster. It is important to use the right cleaning agents and always be extra-light in your touch.  It is best if you, have a stained glass company deep clean your glass once a year too. Finally, if you see small cracks or chips or any sort of structural frame sagging, make sure to get your stained glass repair.  These little spots can turn into big, costly blemishes quickly.

What Is The Difference Between Stained And Leaded Glass?

Posted April 10th, 2018 by Martin Faith

The Difference Between Stained, Leaded and Beveled Glass:

At Scottish Stained Glass we get a lot of questions from Denver homeowners about stained glass and frankly, we love to answer questions for potential and existing customers alike.  The questions range from ones about styles and colors to others about restoration and repair. One question we get quite frequently is from people wondering what the difference is between stained glass and leaded glass and if beveled glass falls into either of those two categories.  While in all reality, stained and leaded glass are more or less the same thing, we have gone into a little detail below about all three nomenclatures to set the record straight and inform you, the general public.

What is Stained Glass vs. Leaded Glass?

Most people in the US use the terms stained glass and leaded glass interchangeably.  While that is perfectly understandable and acceptable, in the stained glass industry we generally refer to stained glass as having color and leaded glass as being clear.  So, as it were, all stained glass can be referred to as leaded, all leaded glass is usually not referred to as stained. The difference, as you can see, is minute but knowing this may help you better communicate the design you are looking for on your Denver home.

What Is Beveled Glass?

Beveled glass is any piece of glass, almost always clear, that has an angled cut around the periphery.  This angled cut makes for a wonderful play of light of the glass and creates gorgeous depth and character.

What is Textured Glass?

Although leaded glass is clear and usually lacks color, it is by no means boring because it is often combined with textured glass pieces.  Textured glass pieces come in a variety of appearances from wavy designs called “water glass” to feathery textures called “glue chip”. Using textured glass in leaded glass windows is a great way to add a classic elegant feel to any area of your Denver home: entryways, bathrooms, kitchens and more!

The Importance of Cleaning and Strengthening Your Kansas City Church’s Stained Glass

Posted April 5th, 2018 by Martin Faith

When properly taken care of, stained glass can last centuries. The beautiful, timeless stained glass pieces featured in Kansas City churches are usually very pertinent and meaningful for congregation members. These colorful works of art can play a major role in the worshiping and inspirational process. Restoration is always an option and typically becomes a necessity around the 75 year to 100 year mark, but regular cleaning and strengthening can stop permanent damage while prolonging periods between each restoration.

How Cleaning and Strengthening Prolongs Stained Glass

There are a lot of factors that can cause deterioration of stained glass. The leading cause of deterioration is often exposure to moisture. There’s no way around it, but your Kansas City church stained glass will be exposed to moisture which leads to corrosion and eventual deterioration. Moisture can cause fungus and mold which escalates decay as well. When moisture is trapped between stained glass panels, it gives a hospitable home for mold to live in and grow. That’s why regular cleanings are so important. Wiping down your stained glass regularly to remove moisture and prevent mold goes a long way. If your stained glass features painted glass elements and the paint isn’t properly baked, the paint itself can lead to further decay.

Cleaning and Repairing Kansas City Church Stained Glass

Due to age, stained glass can lose its luster without proper cleaning and may need polishing and repair. Scottish Stained Glass is happy to help with small repair jobs to complete restoration projects. If your church stained glass simply needs to be polished and has a few simple repairs, we can complete that without having to remove your stained glass windows. Restoration is inevitable– we’re happy to help with major restorations as well. If you need any cleaning and strengthening tips, you’re always welcome to contact us for advice!

Stained glass in places of worship often inspire congregation members in a deeper, symbolic way. With powerful imagery and personal perceptions, synagogue and temple stained glass can be very important to your members. Signs of Stained Glass Deterioration in Dallas Synagogues and Temples

Without having to examine your stained glass, the age of each piece can give you a general idea on whether you need repair or restoration. When stained glass reaches around 75 to 100 years old, this is typically the age range it begins to deteriorate. Significant signs of deterioration often include a white dust appearing on the surface of the glass from the deteriorating lead came, concave or convex pieces of glass, missing or falling pieces of glass, warped or deteriorating lead pieces, a yellowish tint on the glass itself, any misshapen or discolored pieces, and more. Usually a member of your congregation will notice the first signs of deterioration. If you’re unable to spot out these signs, our trained professionals are more than happy to help.

Cathedral Stained Glass Restoration: Exploring Your Options in San Antonio

Posted April 5th, 2018 by Martin Faith

The majority of the stained glass pieces housed in San Antonio’s cathedrals are starting to reach the point of deterioration. This typically happens around the 75 year to 100 year point– deterioration is apparent by warped glass, lead came becoming misshapen, white film or dust surfacing on the window itself, and more. With such powerful symbolism and imagery, it’s important for many congregations to start the discussion of stained glass restoration.

Getting a Proper Bid for Your San Antonio Cathedral Stained Glass Restoration

When starting the process of finding the right stained glass artisan to restore your stained glass, it’s vital to have a solid understanding of the restoration process in order to successfully restore your antiques. When stained glass begins to deteriorate, we always recommend starting the restoration process at the first signs in order to avoid irreversible damage. Every bid you receive should begin with an on-site assessment of your stained glass. A team of stained glass artisans should determine the causes of deterioration, evaluate all the work that needs to be completed, and give a proper cost-benefit analysis after assessment. It’s important to determine whether your stained glass needs simple in-house repairs, complete restoration, or is a candidate for replacement.

Cathedral Stained Glass Restoration Process

After determining if your cathedral stained glass qualifies for restoration, receiving a comprehensive estimate, and deciding to move forward with your restoration with your chosen stained glass repair studio, the process begins with removing your stained glass panels and carefully transporting them back to the repair studio. The stained glass windows then soak in a proprietary soap blend for up to two weeks in order to remove decades of dirt buildup and to take the window apart piece by piece. Each damaged piece is replaced and set with new lead came. Black cement is forced into the cracks, ensuring your stained glass lasts another century. After reinstallation, your congregation will be amazed by the fresh, shiny new look of your beloved stained glass!

Should Your Fort Collin’s Church Replace Or Restore Its Historical Stained Glass?

Posted March 28th, 2018 by Martin Faith

Replacing And Repairing Stained Glass On Fort Collins Churches

Fort Collins is an older city here in Colorado and arguably has some of the most beautiful and aged church stained glass windows in the state. Each of these windows has a unique look and an even more distinct history. They are ostensibly valuable pieces of history and rightfully cherished by the parishioners of the churches they grace. In fact, churchgoers love them so much, we do quite a few restorations in the Fort Collins area. However, not every church is sure what to do with the stained glass they know needs work and so we often get the questions on whether replacement or restoration is better. This makes sense since often times the glass can look beyond repair and large-scale repairs are known to be timely and expensive. When we get this kind of inquiry we always tell church patrons that whether to replace or repair stained glass is really a decision they need to make based on their individual stained glass and budget. However, we can shed some light on factors to consider when making that decision as we have below.

Weigh The Cost Of Replacing Vs. Repairing Stained Glass Windows

Restoring damaged stained glass windows, especially very large ones, can get pricey. However, once they are restored, they are 4x more valuable than new stained glass windows. While a new window may cost less upfront, it will be decades before its value is near that of a restored antique stained glass window. If your church wants to restore the glass but lacks the funds, we, at Scottish Stained Glass Fort Collins are happy to give you advice on fundraisers we have seen other churches do. In our 25+ year experience, this type of project is one most congregation and even communities readily support.

Understand That Scottish Stained Glass Can Match Your Existing Glass

Another reason churches hesitate to replace their stained glass is that they think antique glass cannot be recreated the same as theirs, which could be 100 years old. While it is true that techniques used to create antique stained glass are often hard to replicate, happily, here at Scottish, we hire the best-stained glass repair artists in the state and they are nearly always able to match any stained glass panel. Also, for those very large windows, we have developed special methods for removing and restoring and reinstalling them just as they were. Keep in mind these types of restorations are lengthy but well worth it once the amazing windows on your church, so full of sentimental and monetary value, are restored back to their original luster and beauty for the next 80-100 years.

Consider The History Of Your Church Stained Glass

Finally, church members must never forget how much historical value their Fort Collins church’s stained glass windows hold. Their value is as much monetary as it is sentimental–so keeping them and restoring them when possible is a good idea. If your stained glass is very old (dating back to the early-mid 20th century) it is likely that your church’s stained glass windows were crafted by a stained glass master of the time– increasing their value. Works by skilled artisans plays an important part in the history of Fort Collins and your church and likely worth preserving.
